i think its usefull if your new to guitar and need to build strength. asside from that id only use it if i simply couldnt practice for some reason. You cant really use it all the time, after all too much exercise could damage your hand.

Actually, the human body was designed to adapt to the work it is asked to do. You could tire out your hand, but not damage it. Over time it can do nothing but improve your hand strength.
I've got one, and it has helped. I use it predominately to strengthen my ring and pinky fingers. Five minutes a day is plenty,
I think strength training the hands with the Gripmaster or even squeezing a raquet ball helps in keeping the bulk of the hand muscles in shape. Certain types of music like thrash and death metal pretty much demand this kind of exercise since they rely heavily on endurance.
