Hi again,

I know I have not been around much but the posts I can make I hope to make with as much information as I can. After a few bad weeks myself I have managed to get some strength back although my lungs are still sore and aching. I have managed to be supportive to Jessica just at the right moment and so my story unfolds……………………

…..after going six days overdue Jessica did finally go into labor, the days building up to it were uncomfortable for her and it started to affect her emotionally! She wasn’t angry or unpleasant but she was very self critical and impatient, I could fully understand her emotional dilemma.

On Thursday morning just twelve minutes into the new day as we were lying in bed after a relaxing evening at home watching ‘The Office an American workplace’ enjoying a take away meal from Engleburt Humperdinck’s favorite restaurant which is a mile from where we live, I digress.
Like a bolt of lightning Jessica started to complain about the pain of a contraction, as soon as it passed within about three minutes the next one started but they were not gentle growing in strength they were escalating like a piano falling from a window. This was very traumatic for us and we rang the midwife because we planned a home birth using a birthing pool. As I tried to hurriedly prepare everything I could see Jessica was getting extremely distressed, she was in our bathroom crouching on the floor starting to go into shock and becoming almost delirious from the intensity of the pain.

I contacted the midwife again who had briefly spoken with Jessica while I was making ready the house for what was to come, she realized something wasn’t going to plan and was hurrying to us. When she checked Jessica she realized that instead of the hours that this should have taken to get to the point we were at Jessica had infact got there within ten minutes!!! This explained the agony that she was in. The midwife immediately called for help which was always due but the seriousness of the timing meant they had to be ready without wasting any time, it was only at this point Jessica was able to receive any form of pain relief (entonox) gas and air which is all she had throughout delivery.

As soon as the second midwife arrived things shifted up a gear and Jessica who had been kept under control by the midwife was now encouraged to deliver, within about thirty minutes all the signs were good and along came our new addition to the family! This was a great relief for me I could see that Jessica, though still in shock, was visibly more comfortable although she still needed much of our support. Within three minutes of Junior arriving blinking into this world a knock at the door came and Hayley who is a student Midwife and has been attached to us arrived! I felt sorry for her because she’d driven for an hour only to miss the delivery by minutes. But she stayed with us and helped with paperwork and give comfort to Jessica while I made Coffee and Tea for everyone.

The whole three stages took about three and a half hours which though at the time was distressing for Jessica I feel the briefness of time means she managed to get through labor with much less pain than a full or extended labor would have brought her.

The second midwife left and the testing of Jessica and the baby began which was handled so lovingly by the first Midwife and Hailey, Jessica bathed but collapsed on her way back to bed and the baby was slightly cold! After a call to our local Hospital the Maternity department requested that they both be transferred and monitored. An ambulance duly arrived (the second to come to our house in Three weeks!) and they were spirited away. In a matter of minutes I found myself alone at home, just me and the two dogs! They had been afraid of all the uniformed people wandering about and I found them both hiding in the Kitchen.

I showered and drove to join Jessica and the baby at the hospital; I found them in a side-room with Jessica in bed and the baby under a heater. The midwife and student stayed a further twenty minutes and after a hug and exchange of thanks and well wishes we were left alone to talk about what had just happened! I stayed for an hour and then returned home for some sleep.

The hospital decided to keep both of them until the following day while they monitored Jessica’s iron levels and blood pressure, they were concerned that Jessica’s fainting was due to lack of iron. I collected them late Friday afternoon and brought them home which is where we find ourselves now! With Jessica getting her strength back and junior adjusting to feeding and sleeping, he is very active at night!!!!! So I foresee some long nights and sleepy days for mother and baby.

Jessica is coping well although very tired and Baby Oscar our son is happy and contented, me, I am doing my best to keep them comfortable.

Pictures to follow
