which one did you like? i'm assuming you are probably referring to the ones of The Indigo. i love that style... now mind you, there are other styles, more tradition cabaret style, alot more fast paced and shimmy shimmy like shakira, etc. , but my personal taste and preference is for the stuff more like The Indigo... slower more defined moves, less shimmy and more isolations, like with the belly rolls and serpentine arms and snakelike movements.... fluidity and elegance, like you said. i think it's beautiful.

anyway, frank... luckily for you, you live in california :) The Indigo is a San Francisco bellydance company. They do alot of things all over California, including southern california. So maybe you can catch them sometime somewhere... if i hear of them performing anywhere in so cal i'll certainly let you know.

thank you. i only got to see the first couple you posted. i've always thought the belly dancing i've seen looked kinda trashy. this was artistry and poetry in motion.

Matt, you mentioned Spanish guitar. I imagine that came from a very ealy Spanish tradition. Spain has only been part of what we think of as Western Europe for a few hundred years. The peninsula that it sits on 'Iberia' was Arab until it was captured, those Spanish guitar styles have perhaps imerged from earlier arab techniques.

well cool! that is what it is SUPPOSED to be, unfortunately, there are alot of "bellydancers" who seem to be no more than strippers without the stripping, and that is ALWAYS a subject of controversy amongst bellydancers world over.

I'm glad i was able to show you something different than you've seen and hopefully given you a whole new respect for the art - that makes me feel like i've done something positive for my fellow dancers.

THANK YOU for taking the time to watch a couple of videos and check it out despite what your personal experiences have been. I like open-minded people! :)

yeah, i think it's sad that alot of people view arabic/middle eastern people as overzealous religious fuitcakes with bombs strapped to their backs.... and that is so not the case. Just as with any culture, they have their freaks, yes. But don't we all? Look at how many active serial killers there are in the US right now. Or people that bomb abortion clinics (not to open up that can of worms...) and the countless other horrid acts that people the world over do all in the name or religion, or race, or whatever....

Luckily, it appears that most people on this forum are educated enough to think outside of the box.

Good point, though, i know that subject is kind of near and dear to you.

*please see my "Barbie culture" post above... somewhere... i felt the same way... once you get past that, you find that you can make your body do amazing things... and it's totally the fountain of youth, most bellydancers look really, really young even when they are not. it's good for mind, body and spirit, which i think keeps you young. my instructor, Isis, is over 70 years old (i think 72) and this is her:

Fascinating!

Do you know of any of the details of the moors 'visiting' the British Isles.

Someone told me once it was a theory why the Welsh are so dark (my mum's famly are all welsh) and also all dark.

I find this very ineteresting!

Hi Matt

It is very possible that Wales would have links into Arab/Spanish culture and inter-marriage. Wales and Ireland had very close links due to both countries being opposed to England politicaly and culturally. The Irish had masses of Spanish migrants and even there first post indepenance Prime minister was of Spanish blood.
I have heard of groups flooding into Wales and I imagine that Spaniards would migrate nothwards and end up there. Lets not forget the things that the Church did in Spain with forced conversion and murdering people who refused. They also converted the Moques and Sultans Palaces into Cathedrals.
THe last influx of people I know of was the Italians in the late 19th C as well as French and ships of the Spanish Armarda were washed up on the shore and the sailors intergrated into the local families.
