Black Les Paul?
Just wondering if there are any photos of Randy playing the black Les Paul live that he is shown in a few staged photos with.
I have never seen it in any of the photos of Randy's guitar stable either.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Black Les Paul?
There are images of him with the black standard similar to Jeff Becks, but those images are when he was with Queit Riot. I have heard that guitar was Jodi's brothers but I don't know for sure if thats true. The black custom shown in the photo shoot was one he didn't have very long. Ive heard a phone interview with Delores and she said that he only really had that for the photoshoot and never got to use it.
Re: Black Les Paul?
I heard the same thing, that it was just acquired and he hadn't used it for any live shows yet.

This one's interesting. Could of been one of John Thomas' from support band "Budgie".quinnsryche wrote:Thanks guys. I didn't think so.

The one in question is a black beauty with 3 pick ups and Randy was seen using this in a photo shoot. It's rumoured that the guitar was going to be modified as Randy din't like the action on the guitar and the 3 pick ups wasn't his thing. I think he bought a few guitars from a pawn shop including a white Gibson SG.rokket wrote:This one's interesting. Re: Black Les Paul?
both of the black LP's are mentioned here in an old thread. Frank got this info from a reliable source.
"my trusted and reliable source comes through again:
"The black Les Paul that GuitarIdol is referring to as having seen Randy with in a bar is from 1980, as the original band with Lee Kerslake and Bob Daisley are in the pic. This is not thought to be the same Black Beauty that Randy posed with in his last photo session (that you provided shots from) with John Livzey. The consensus is that the guitar in the bar shot is one that belonged to guitarist John Thomas, whose band Budgie opened up for Ozzy on the very first Blizzard tour of the UK. He played a black Les Paul also. Randy and John (JT) became very good friends during that time period and John let Randy play a lot of his guitars in their off-time. So, that's what has been pieced together on that.
As for Randys black Les Paul, Kevin said Randy picked that up in the last few months to a year of his life at a pawn shop. It could POSSIBLY have been picked up in England during the recording of Diary in early '81, but it didn't seem to look exactly the same as the one in the bar and no shots of it appeared till that last photo session, though it was mentioned in a November issue of Circus. Kevin said Randy also picked up a 3 pickup white SG because he loved Glen Buxton (Alice Cooper guitarist) so much. No photos of this guitar have been seen yet."

This was an email John sent me back in 2007.zennman wrote:Does anyone know the date of that last Livzey photo shoot?
Hey Shaun: I'll answer this right away, lest I forget. Well, it was
not long before he was killed...maybe by two months. I know he was
gone before Guitar World published the issue with my stuff in it. He
came to the studio with a female publicist (I've often wondered what
happened to her - I'll attach the one picture I took with her) and he
had very recently returned from London, and he complained about jet
lag. He was there for about an hour, maybe a little longer, as we did
at least three set-ups. He even used my guitar in a few, a classical,
gut string model.
Sometime after the accident, his sister called me and it turned out
that he was from Burbank, just over the hill from Hollywood, where my
place was, and I had also been raised in Burbank. But, our having a
hometown-in-common never came up while he was there. Her brother,
that would be Randy's brother-in-law, came over a few days later and
told me the story of what had happened. Just recently, I read the
chapter in Sharon's book about that day and it was pretty much the
same story he had told. She was actually sleeping on the bus! But,
you probably know that, knowing all the trivia. He ordered prints of
Randy, to be given to the mother after the shock had worn off.
Several people have told me that he was only in a studio situation
that one time and that all other images of him were live, on stage.
I remember how I found out about it. I lived in my studio back then
and one Saturday morning, with nothing much to do, I was thumbing
through a pile of LA Times newspapers and in the back of one of the
front sections there was a small article about a Florida plane
crash. And they listed Randy by his complete, official name, Randall
William Rhoads. And, it did not occur to me for a moment that I
knew this name. It dawned on me very slowly, but I finally put it
together that it was the nice kid from Ozzy's band who had been here
several weeks earlier. What a shock, as is hearing of anyone you know
(or have met) who is no more...
You can post this on your site, if you'd like.
Warm Regards, John Livzey
