People want money for everything.
Haven't you heard? You actually have to pay to
feed yourself now
Well, I can understand TV networks and such but it's the random people that piss me off. Like some random dick who who had the good fortune to take his super8 camera to an Ozzy concert, 30 years later finds the footage he never gave a shit about and twigs he can probably sell it for an extortionate amount of money.

To put it into context I have quite a bit of random footage of various unknown bands at low key gigs. None of it is posted online, only I have the copy on tape or HDD. I don't really give a shit about the footage, most of it I forget about. Suppose in five years one of those bands become famous, in ten years legends. A lot of fans would probably love to see my footage, and maybe I'll remember I have it among all my tapes.

Would I sell it? Hell no, if anyone wanted it I'd give away my junk for free. And if I was a fan I wouldn't sell my only copy, i'd back that baby up! :P

Occasionally I here murmurings of people with Randy "artifacts" of various kinds, often its fake but there is always money involved, makes me sad. :(

There is no way that I'd negotiate with someone who is trying to make an assload of cash for personal stock, what I meant was the in-house footage that may be lying in the dust somewhere.

Does anyone know what the general policies were back then for venues? I'm trying to come up with ideas as to the best points of contact, what to say, so on so forth? I guess once we got past that, then proceed to the cash flow. I can't imagine that something wasn't overlooked all those years ago, even just a little something.

unless the O's scrubbed that shit clean. I can't imagine them turning down any opportunity for more media exposure but I think their issue may be with the quality of whatever may be laying around, same reason for re-doing the vocal tracks on bat heads soup and then packing it for Tribute. used to love Ozzy, but let's face it, performing wasn't always perfect.

Back to topic; like stress2stress2 said- someone may get lucky and get an employee who doesn't know what is being looked for or at in specific, so the best policy to proceed may be to ask questions that don't give it away. If the person in charge even senses there is an opportunity to extort, they will.

I guess that if this is a sensitive issue, for those interested in this, please PM me and we'll take it from there. I don't want to make waves or entertain condescension- I would like ideas:)

RRFan4Ever, I don't mean to discourage you, but if you are specifically looking for 'official' video that may have been taken by staff at venues I think you will be out of luck. I do believe there is footage out there, but I just can't imagine why a venue would invest any time or money in filming a gig. They wouldn't be able to sell it and if they wanted to shoot it properly on video they would require a very skilled technician, if they wanted to do a good job on super 8 they would need to get a soundboard recording and sync it up later. Maybe I'm just showing my age :P

Then again, that's not to say someone backstage may have filmed it for themselves. If you want recommendations I would suggest contacting the venues and trying to find/track down whoever was on the soundboard that night or backstage crew. They are most likely to know one way or another whether there were any cameras there.

If you want to figure out which venues may have had filming done, I would suggest searching to see if there have been any boot legs for other high profile acts at the same venue throughout the years. Thanks to people like Randy Perry there is a pretty comprehensive list of venues, it would simply be a matter of searching the venue and say; "Van Halen bootleg". If anything 'official' shows up then you never know... of course this is a very hit and miss idea, but it is perhaps the quickest route to determining which venues have the best odds of gold.
