Well said. After listening to this CD more and more, I think you are right. It's just a question of how it flows. Tribute sounds very cohesive to me, whereas this new release sounds like a hatchet job. If you forget about that for a minute and just enjoy it for what it is, then it's actually a pleasant live album to listen to.Trigger wrote:I am drummer too of 30+years and though I agree it sounds odd in places I am in no doubt that it is Tommy but I think production has made us think something is odd about the recording! this recording sounds so different to other recordings i nquality I think it makes us over analyze things. BUT I did wonder if because they were recording the band took liberties and tried a few things out so they could listen back to them in a live setting?, I do believe after long contimplattion that additons might have been made during the mastering of the live show. I have noticed a few one offs by Tommy during his 5 year career with Ozzy. Tommy still remains a favorite of mine and he is by far the greatest drummer to have played with Ozzy. AND this is a mix of shows and I think we are getting a range times during the 1981 tour compiled into one show, inc Mr Crowley's intro was from 1980 and the guitar solo sounds very sliced up!windingrhoads wrote:Well I've listened to it 3 or 4 times all the way through, and the one thing I pick up when listening through headphones is the drums seem off somehow. I would venture to say that I would not be shocked if we found out that the drum track is not Tommy A, but redone by someone else. I have been a drummer for over 20 years and Tommy is one of my all time favs, I have listened to his playing for a very long time. Some of the sections of passes and characteristics that Tommy puts into the tunes were simply not there in my opinion. To my ears it almost sounded like someone else trying to copy what he did, but was not able to do it completely, and let too much of their own style come out in some of those passes during recording. The biggest thing for me was during Revelation Mother Earth, there is some double kick accents throughout some of the sections that Tommy simply didn't do. At least not on the recordings that I have or have heard. Now, it's either someone else or this is a show that was recorded soon after Tommy joined Ozzy's band and was still finding his way in the set. Don't know, but I would be curious to see what the rest of you think about this.
Also, this doesn't sound like a complete show to me, it really sounds like a mix match of various shows. If you allow yourself to really listen to the performances, it seems like they don't all come from the same show, it's like the matched up the drums, vocals and guitar from different shows and pasted them together to create one performance. The audience is what really throws me off because it is not real, or original for that matter. Why do they do this? This won't be purchased by the masses, but the box is purchased from the die hards, so why not leave the original show alone, warts and all? I'd be much happier with that than something that was put together by someone who feels they can determine what I should hear and how I would want it to sound. Bullshit.
its so much better than TRIBUTE!!!

Sorry...BUT...NO....this is Rudy & Tommy on the whole show. The styles sound nothing like Bob & Lee......give a listen to the Crowley EP and some '80 bootlegs.windingrhoads wrote:I can confirm that the following tracks do indeed include Bob and Lee on drums:
Mr. Crowley
Revelation
Steal Away the night
Suicide Solution

It is very obvious to me, as per my previous post that the drums on this recording is off somehow and I knew that they weren't tommy. In fact the dead give away is the double snare accents throughout Crowley that Tommy simply never did. I imagine it was a way for the Osbournes to not credit them for the playing so they wouldn't have to pay them additional fees for this new release. Most people will not notice the difference. So it seems that most of this is the southhampton show, hence the error on the initial promo pictures with that name on the CD in the photo of the box set.
They mixed other tunes from the Tommy-Rudy line up to throw people off and to cover their tracks. I think this proves that there really isn't much else left in the vaults and they did a cut and paste job of a few shows they had access to.
I think this pretty much closes to book on this issue and soon enough we'll see some of the truth leak out.

i think the new mexico version of mr. crowley is one of the best ever recorded
Re: its so much better than TRIBUTE!!!
The one thing that kind of Irks me is the fact that they didn't release a Diary show. Disagree? listen to the Kalamazoo or the Minneapolis show. Randy was in TOP form (can't say the same about Ozz, I'm afraid) Or if someone remastered the New Years Eve 1981 Diary show, that could be released too!

I do agree they should have done a diary show. that way it is different than TRIBUTE and also its the 2nd disc to Diary of a Madman. It would make more sense. Missed oppertunity for sure.

Re: its so much better than TRIBUTE!!!
I have a theory about Maybe why Ozzy hasn't released a live version of "Over The Mountain" on album:
-The lyrics about "you don't need a ticket to fly with me/I'm free, yeah" probably creeps him out still in light of how Randy, Rachel and the pilot died..
-Ozzy never got the proper lyrics right live, but that never stopped him from overdubbing and re-recording the proper lyrics for "Believer" on 'Tribute'..
Fortunately, we at least have that clip of the song from the New Mexico footage on the boxed set dvd.
I agree with whoever said that 'Tribute' is more cohesive than 'Ozzy Live'.
'Ozzy Live' does seem to be a bit Frankenstein'ed together, this part sewn together with that one, and...
Come to think of it, I actually prefer a majority of the bootlegs over this live disc. It's more honest, warts and all. For what it is, 'Ozzy Live' is cool. I just don't always feel super-compelled to listen to it that much. It's kinda distracting finding yourself guessing or wondering which songs came from which show, whereas 'Tribute' is about 85% from one show (Cleveland 5/11/81).
I remember before there was file sharing or the internet, and I used to think that the 7/28/81 Montreal show was from the 'Diary Of A Madman' tour in late '81, and that that was the only live bootleg of Ozzy and Randy out there.. Such myths to cling to when you aren't fully in the know..
Which is why it's still mind-boggling to have found So Many Shows of good quality available within this website..
A dream come true a thousand times over, for a thirty-plus-years-long fan of Ozzy, Randy and The Blizzard Of Ozz..
It was even fun being naive' about all of the above and not knowing...
Peace/Cheers/Thanks.

Re: its so much better than TRIBUTE!!!
I've actually been messing about EQ-ing and restoring the actual speed of the L.A. 12/31/81 show. I've been dabbling with that one on and off for some weeks now. Then, it was 1/22/82 Milwaukee, Chelmsford 10/22/80 to make it more stereo and a tad less mono...fraroc wrote:The one thing that kind of Irks me is the fact that they didn't release a Diary show. Mixing them manually on an 8-track analog recorder..
Nice way to relax and jam out at the same time.
I need to eventually upload them digitally.
Kalamazoo 2/9/82 needs to be sped up a tad, as well.
I love it that there are even shows like this in circulation.
God Bless (pun intended/no pun intended for the Ozzy movie lol)
Cheers!
Re: its so much better than TRIBUTE!!!
I have the un-circulated Milwaukee show that was breifly upped on a torrent. It is better than the one circulating. Give me a host and I'll up it soon.
Info and set listing.......
Ozzy Osbourne live at the Milwaukee Mecca Auditorium on January 22nd 1982 USA
*****THIS IS AN UPGRADE TO TORRENT #292737 AS THAT IS MY RECORDING FROM LISTENING TO THE YOU-TUBE LINK.
I JUST ARCHIVED THE MASTER A FEW MOMENTS AGO FOR THE FIRST TIME. ALSO IN ALL THE YEARS I NEVER SAW ANOTHER SOURCE OF THIS RECORDING.*****
*****DIGITAL ARCHIVE DEBUT TODAY*****
This was a cold snowy day like near snowstorm level. Driving 70 miles north to Milwaukee up 94 me and my buddy spun out into the shoulder
from all the snow. My buddy says "we are nuts taking this drive to Milwaukee". Yeah right like i am not recording tonight. I was 5th row main floor
left center. Ozzy was liquored up as you could see yourself in his eyes. Listen when he says "I hear the animal thothiety is here"
.
It was a rocking show. Randy played well. The PA system on the left had troubles all night as the tweeter kept cutting out and cutting back in all
throughout the show. I was so close to the stage that it did not hamper the sound too much. But if you are listening closely, you can hear this.
I went up to the sound board and asked what the deal was with that and told me to get the fuck out of here. It was best to get out of there.
This is the first time I have shared this recording flat/raw. The cassettes I let out in the day were all equalized on the Inductive Coil Soundcraftman EQ.
This about 78 minutes long. I needed two Gold cdr's but one 80 minute will do.
Microphones: Sony ECM 33F
Tape Deck: Sony TC-D5M
Cassettes: TDK SAX-90
Recorded with Dolby B but I choose to leave it off on this playback
Master Tape > Sony TC-D5M (ORIGINAL UNIT!!)
Run Through the Naim 52 Pre-amplifier
To the Philips CDR-101 (Marantz CDR-600) [tracked on the fly]
Using CDR Yaiyo Yuden 74-ZY Gold (The best!)
Playback in PC with Plextor UltraPlex40max SCSI CD-ROM
EAC in paranoid mode to slow the read speed.
FLAC > To You Guys, Enjoy RB
