The original Mr. Crowley off Blizzard is the greatest guitar solo of all time in my opinion. Also my favorite guitar work by Randy followed by Over the Mountain.

Clapton has "Layla", Randy has "Crazy Train"!
but to true fans its kind of cliche'.. as we know he was capable of way more..

I'm with you: "Mr. Crowley" is pretty epic.. What's even more impressive is that Randy has the ability to multi-track his solos without missing a note or a beat. He's one of a kind, Randy is (I say "is" because music = immortalitywatersfootball wrote:In your opinion, what is randys best Played song in his short career with ozzy?bi believe that mr. Crowley was the most brilliant and best played... What are your opinions??

Randy was consummately great. Flash AND Substance. His solos themselves were melodic enough and catchy enough to serve the song and yet highlight his talents. His musical vocabulary all-around far exceeded his chronological age. There really isn't a single clunker to be had on either 'Blizzard Of Ozz', 'Diary Of A Madman' or on the soundcheck-recorded "You Said It All", from the 'Mr. Crowley Live!' E.P. .
Randy's work has aged gracefully, and Yet, it Still sounds fresh and timeless as ever. A true musical genius, he looked cool and could play circles around most guitarists. His work is still comparable and competitive to anyone since then. Randy Rules Still!

Re: "Little Dolls"
That Bridge that happens during the middle of the song: frickin' genius! Those four (Ozzy, Randy, Bob & Lee) worked supernaturally-well together as songwriters and as the band recording the songs. "Little Dolls" doesn't have a guitar solo per se', but, arguably, it still doesn't need one. Supposedly, this song was one where -because of time constraints around the time they recorded 'Diary'- Randy was unable to put a proper solo on "Little Tracks". Like Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and how Kurt Cobain's solo mirrors the songs main melody, Randy's bit in place of a solo mirrors the main melody of "Little Dolls". It works. I still listen to 'Diary' (or 'Blizzard') straight through without feeling compelled to skip ahead. That's how you know an album is true classic. There's a sophistication and yet a groundedness to how these songs unfurl.. 'Blizzard' and 'Diary' have it All: great songs, great performances and fantastic recordings.
Lyrically, I can see where it might detract somewhat from the actual music. It's a dark lyric, visibly hopeless and a drag. Which is why it's cool when the bridge of the song arrives, and the lyric turns on itself and becomes a bit more real, yet positive.
For a "metal" or hard rock album by anyone, there's a lot of subtle sophistication and smarts to how these songs were written, arranged and played.
I've had a few misheard lyric experiences with 'Diary Of A Madman' over the years....and I find I kinda liked what I thought I heard better lol:
Example: "Little Dolls": "I'm telling you/the worst is yet to come" became ('cos of an overplayed original Jet/CBS cassette for 'Diary' from back in the day) "the best is yet to come". The music isn't a bummer, but the lyrics sometimes are. Willing the lyrics to be something else blues lol..
Or, "Diary Of A Madman": "A sickened mind and spirit" has forever been "I sip on wine and spirits" the way I've been hearing it since early '82..
You can think drinking anything, listening to the supple guitars that almost sound like running water, or liquid.
Still one of my all-time favorite records ever, 'Diary Of A Madman'.
Cheers.

Re: What's randys best song on guitar?
I have to agree with everyone. (no shocker there)
Crazy Train is probably the best, fully complete song, with "never before heard" stuff on it well composed
I think that the outro solo on Tonight is his best work, it's really unrivaled in guitar solos for me
I agree that Mr. Crowley was epic and how many 2 solo songs can you think of that were that good up to that point?
I would like to comment on Randy's "slow" solos - GTR, YCKRNR, LD, DOAM - I think he really did a lot with very few notes there. Especially little dolls, I wonder, if given the time, what he would've come up with.

True, but it's the song most recognizable to a general audience connected with Randy.sik_kreations wrote:CanuckRhoadsFan wrote:Crazy Train. "Best" doesn't always have to be the most complex song or a deep cut that hardcore fans like.

Dee or I Don't Know. Blizzard to me is better than Diary.

I love both albums. "Like different but the same" - Cheech Martin. Crowley is a classic smoking, what-the-hell-just-happened solo. Over the mountain - Had the blizzard of oz casting spells and guitar magic. I remember (as a kid) the wang bar part where the note goes harmonic (feedback) and it was so unreal. Revelation - what can I say that hasn't been said? The first part of the solo was something I learned while listening to a piano (tape) lesson. Take an arpeggio, it doesn't matter if major or minor and add a lower minor second (1 fret below) to each of the notes. So, if you were playing an Em the notes would be - Eb, E, F#, G, Bb, B, etc. Listen to Led Zeppelin's "All of my love" keyboard solo. It is in Am and it uses 16th notes of A-Ab-A-C-B-C-E-Eb-E-A-Ab-A-B-A-Ab-C-B-A-G-f E.

i think its his most famous and most notable.. dont think its the best.. top 3 for sure. to me though with people who arent fans or havent really heard more.. if u think thats cool.. listen to this..
Re: What's randys best song on guitar?
It's kinda tricky because you play 4 notes per beat and the first figure would be A-Ab-A-C and I remember trying just to play the triplet..

Listen to wha? I have to agree Crazy Train is the most commercial tune that the general public in general is the most "popular" or has reached the most people. I remember when Ozzy song weren't HM staples and you had to listen to Ozzy (The Rhoads years) on the heavier station, 92 WMJQ that didn't always come in or LP or tape. Our generic rock station (96WCMF) didn't play Ozzy until 1984 when the promoter had a deal with the radio station and it's funny, the format isn't all that different from 1981! Lynard Skynard, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Molly Hatchet, Aerosmith, Beatles, etc. And I love all those bands but they play all the same songs! Fucking A! I've never heard "Little Dolls", "S.A.T.O", "Jailbait", "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" or the "deep" cuts on the Radio. Why? Don't you want to sell this in this capitalist society? No, push the commercial...
