Per Ozzy's book they were gonna get paid for their performances that night.. but they wanted double per diem.
meaning this... the band was given so much money per day to live on. Money for food and so on. they thought since they were doing two shows that day that they should receive double spending money.
Ozzy then went on to say something to the effect of this...

Instead of joining us in our excitment and growth of our popularity, Bob and Lee were busy bitching cause they thought they deserved a double per diem that day. That was the straw the broke the camals back. They were always complainging."
Honestly, I LIKED Lee's image!!! Way better than Tommy. Drummers that play without a shirt are not my cup of tea. Give me a guy like Bonham. That's what Lee was like.
If you put the 1980 BOO line up on stage today, the hipsters would be creaming their panties! Those "track suits" Bob wore sell for top dollar at resale stores.
The greatest thing about that original BOO line up is that they didn't really look like a Metal band. They looked like a rock band. Randy? Yeah, a little L.A. looking, but that's what made it different and cool. Randy BELONGED in a band with a guy who has a beard. It's called ORIGINALITY which is something all of those 80's bands lacked. After Crue got big, everyone slapped on make up, and before long it all looked the same.
Don't get me wrong...I love hair metal and 80's rock, but BOO stood out as something unique, cool, and different.
If Ozzy had any taste and balls, he'd release a killer 1980 show. That's the good stuff! Trust me. None of this Rudy/Tommy crap.
This is show business we are discussing.
Wishful thinking to believe that very talented people have not been overlooked because they had the wrong haircut or shoes, or whatever.
Great hindsight that 30 years later, those beer guts, beards and track suits are back in an ironic 'kinda laughing at ya/with ya' 2K hippy sorta way.
KInda like that yearbook photo that never goes out of date....
You are the first person to refer to Tommy Aldridge as both 'too glam' and 'crap' and rip on Rudy's playing. He was Randy's choice for bass player.
Steve Vai, Pat Travers, Pat Thrall, Gary Moore, John Sykes, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ted Nugent, Scott Gorham, Tony MacAlpine.... not a bad resume for a crap drummer.
Tommy is still active I might ad, and still in demand. I doubt Lee's phone is ringin'.
Let me ask this... Would the Rhoads legacy be what it is today, if he was an ugly ogre? Be honest.
I'll admit that Randy had a killer unique image to compliment his amazing talent, but maybe yes to a certain extent he would have been just as famous if he was not so glam.
Look at guys like Leslie West (who Randy admired) or Clapton, Blackmore, ect. They are just as big of legends cause their chops speak for themselves.
Also, I guess I really don't mean Tommy is a crappy drummer. He's actually great. I just meant to say that it's so old seeing/hearing the Rudy/Tommy stuff.
I think Lee was a more tasteful drummer than Aldridge.
It's been written in many articles that Tommy was a lousy studio drummer. They almost didn't use him on BATM. I remember reading that somewhere on this site. I just don't dig Rudy. The guy never wrote or recorded a single note with Ozzy. Why all the credibility and accolades? It's impossible to even begin to compare Bob and Rudy. One guy did everything, the other guy did nothing...except distract the camera men into thinking his stage moves required significant attention.
I will definitely agree that Bob is a better and more tasteful bassist than Rudy. But his energy and stage presence isn't even close. I don't think there is any comparing Lee and Tommy. Tommy smokes Lee imo. The only notable things Lee ever played on were Uriah Heep and Ozzy stuff of course. I don't think Lee sucks or anything, but he doesn't set the world on fire either. I think Randy needed a drummer with the same high energy that he had. I think he and Tommy go perfect together. The high energy, the improvising. Neither of those things describe Lee Kerslake. But of course thats just my opinion

I'm in awe of Randy's playing, not his looks. I wouldn't care what he looked like, his guitar playing is brilliant. In regards to other players, Gary Moore wasn't exactly an oil painting, neither was S.R.V........geez Hendrix wasn't exactly pretty...........!!!

Bob & Lee had left the band long before the Palladium gigs came about in May 1981.

They were still in the band when the US tour was booked and tickets were selling......it was only a matter of a few weeks before the palladium show that they were fired.....
The Ardens took one look at Randy Rhoads and went 'cha-ching'.
Brilliant player and a total rock star too.
Hendrix had style/flair. So did SRV. Gary Moore did not. My opinion only, but if Moore had the looks to go with his playing, he would have been massive.
And wasn't Bob Daisley a peroxide blond while in Moore's band?
Bob and Lee are better looking guys than Rudy and Tommy too in my opinion. Tommy? I mean, come on...that dude looks creepy as f-ck in my opinion. Rudy may have looked the part, but so what? Like I said - listen to Slip of the Tounge by Whitesnake and the bass work is about as adventerous as a 2 year old crapping it's diaper for the 10,000th time.
And as far as Tommy playing in a bunch of bands beforehand (Pat Travers, Black Oak Arkansas) those bands aren't any more reputable than Uriah Heep.
Here's something to consider, there are lots of "hired" musicians who get hired for tours, and then there are the guys who record AND tour AND they do both really well.
I'd grade Tommy and Rudy as B+ live musicians and D- studio musicians.
But seriously, I just like giving Rudy and Tommy a tough time cause they replaced two guys that were really good. But yeah, both Rudy and Tommy can definitely play, and they were cool on stage. Not MY preference, but heck, it worked for Ozzy...
AndrewT1976 wrote:Watch that new 1990 Whitesnake at Donington DVD, and you'll STILL see Rudy acting stupid on stage. Like he's having sex with his bass.
Now watch Steve Vai there....... (even Rudy didn't stood out there)
Overall (including songwriting) Lee was probably the best guy for the band. BUT live I prefer Tommy Aldrigde. Really like his style of drumming! Seen him a couple times live (with Whitesnake & Malmsteen) he always had a great drumsound and performance, adding a nice flow to the band! I like Lee too, but he is a very different drummer though. For live playing Randy with Tommy is my favorite combo!

wait, when did he play with Malmsteen?
So who is Tommy drumming with now ? he was playing with Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake and as far as i know both bands have just recently toured in the UK and Tommy wasn't drumming with either of them. I know he had an accident in 2009 and broke his collar bone and that put him out for along time drumming. Answers on a post card to what he's doing now ?.
