I mean, really...his moves should be named...

The ...."Yellow Pages thumb licking like an 80 year old Grandpa does"

The...."3-point stance down, down, up, swirl head, crouching dragon"

AND...

The...."Play with my fingers on top of the neck by reaching my forearm around the front."

You've really covered the bulk of Rudy's existence as a bassist during the Ozzy years.

Poor ole Rudy... Dude is classy as Hell but gets ripped so hard on this site because the camaramen of the few vids we have always seem to wanna show Rudy during a guitar solo. lol I'm sure if Rudy had his way those vids would show Randy during those moments. But clearly his cheesy antics caught the attention of the producers and camaramen. Rudy's look is corny but it wasn't in 1981.

The general public hears with their eyes. Let's see, we got Gene Simmons sticking out his tongue every five seconds for the last 40 years. Dio flashing the devil horns, Ozzy flashing peace signs, Zakk and his chest-beating, beer guzzling Stone Cold Steve Austin salute after every song. Rudy Schenker with his lock jaw schtick... I could go on.

Exactly! In "Off the Rails" Rudy mentions that quite a few times. If you watch the NM footage, Randy gets out of the way when Ozzy is on his side of the stage as well. Pretty lame to be told how to conduct yourself onstage... being in a rock band and all.

I guess I'm curious as to how Rudy "ruined" any of the new footage. Do you think he told the cameraman to focus on him?

I don't have a problem with Rudy, or his "stage moves" I just have a problem with the footage.. Sorry, but its garbage. Im glad it was released, and ill still buy it if it comes out as a stand alone DVD, but at the end of the day it not great at all. People only perceive it as "great" because we have so little footage of Randy. Its kinda like if you don't eat for week, even a subpar meal will taste like the best shit you ever ate. The footage sucks because for one, we can hardly even see Randy. The other reason it sucks is because to be honest, its a subpar performance. The band sounds a tad sloppy if you ask me. Ozzy is singing "Over the Carpet" Give me a break. Its ok, it happens. I just don't fall into the whole "OMG Randys guitar went out of tune! He human! This is great!" stuff.

I can almost gurantee that if Randy were alive he would be appalled at the footage. He wouldn't think its great at all. And he probably wouldn't even want people to watch it. I can't speak for him, I can only assume. Im a musician also, and I know that when my own band tapes a show and we have a subpar performance, we don't want anyone hearing it!

Don't get me wrong guys. Im not saying the footage is the worst thing ever, or anything like that. But its definitely not great, and its for sure not worth the $150 bucks a lot of people paid for it.

Gotta agree, that is not a great performance. Randy seems rather subdued. There is no eye contact - or very little- going on in that footage between the players.
Nobody onstage looks too thrilled to be there, either.

One thing about it is that the sound we get is a monitor mix. That is not the sound the fans were hearing. that is pretty much what Rudy heard during the show. And the muscians here can tell ya... monitor mix and front of house to completly different.

I think that made him 'over' acting his moves a bit we can see in that '82 footage, to compensate..... Some quotes in "Off the Rails" do suggest that as well. btw I don't see him move that exaggerated in the Palladium footage, probably because he wasn't instructed there yet to stay in that 'square'.... (same for AH)
It's all $haron's fault! :P

WHO KNEW the "After Hours" video director would later become an even more musically clueless film school student?

I mean, what are the odds of that happening?!

Quoted for truth. Amen to this. Especially the subpar meal analogy.

I know people will complain that WE'RE complaining about the footage, and while I'm happy that we have more footage at all, it is pretty mediocre, given the hefty price tag. We can only hope there's more, better footage where this came from.

Dude, ease up a little will ya? The moves might seem dated now but at the time Rudy was doing this, many saw it as entertaining, or as Jay said "aggressive". Apart from Steve Harris and Gene Simmons, most bass players barely moved at all onstage. That approach worked just fine in the 70s but once MTV arrived in 1981 fans started to expect more. The emphasis on music videos was part of this shift to equal parts music and visuals. After Sarzo left Ozzy he went on to experience multi-platinum success with both Quiet Riot and Whitesnake. He's the only Ozzy sideman over 32 years who went on to join a further TWO bands who sold millions after he became a member. I personally think that Bob is a better bassist, but Rudy had this success at least to some extent IMO because he did put a lot into the visual part of performing which meant he had a good understanding of where the music biz was at in the 1980s.

Rudy is a good bass player and seems to be a pretty decent guy. Slamming him for looking lame in the 80s, like he was the only dude who did, is pretty shitty. Anyone notice Ozzy's shirt? Is that better?
