Interesting point about Zakk, you can DEFINITELY see where he got his squealing chops from:-))

Zakk has never made it a secret he idolizes RR. Gives him the respect due. Watch this, it's SHOCKING how much he really sounds like Randy at some points.

Ok. Thank you.

Well, I venture to say that this new live cd is a real treasure! It is much better than Tribute, however, when Tribute is re-mastered someday, that might be a different story.

The low end on the new disc is awesome.

Plus, lots of capabilities with plug-ins in Pro Tools and Logic and probably great outboard compressors, maximizers, and EQ's.

AceVader wrote:Yeah. But like I JUST said in another thread.....VERY odd note choices from Randy here. Its definitely his playing, his technique, his picking, his tone, everything. So it's him. But he really picks some very different notes and modes for some of his fills on these live tracks, very different from any other live stuff Ive heard.
From the first moment I heard it I thought the same.
It says it's a 1981 live cd, but his playing, those compressed sounding squals (and just fading too quick each time....) sounds more like how he played in 1982........ He is doing more different fills and stuff but just not that tasteful as he did in 1981 (imo), sounds like at times he was frustrated things didn't jump out of the speakers the way he wanted and tried more harder. (too hard at times....) In 1981 his playing sounded much more happy to me. So at times I hear a 1982 vibe here, no suprise to me if some of those recordings are from those 1982 soundboard tapes.......... (?)

I totally agree. I think it's 1982 as well. I know Randy was having problems hearing his guitar during the Diary tour (beacuse of the stage set up - i.e., his cabs were recessed and hidden, so he couldn't hear himself). Maybe he didn't take the "risks" with fills like he did in 81' for a few reasons...first, whenever you start a tour, you are a little uncertain, but by the end of the tour, you start to have more fun and take risks. Secondly, the fact that he couldn't hear himself on stage.

Randy's playing sounds really frustrated. I agree. His rythyms are fantastic, but his fill selections are not as brilliant as 81.

I wish the Osbournes would have put the venue/date on each tune. That would help explain.

Also - to echo your comment, I feel like the squeals don't have any sustain, and dare I say, they don't even sound like him. Randy's squeals were sharp in nature, and had sustain. The squeals on this new live album are short and fat, and lack sustain.

Maybe it was his guitar selection. Maybe it was his pedal board or maybe even his amplifiers.

But something is definitely off a little bit...

And the album was recorded in area 51 next to where they faked the moon landing   .How the hell would we know RR couldn't hear himself-he had marshall side fills 5-10 feet away CRANKED they are notoriously loud  . We know the DOAM set had sound issues but the band could hear themselves or there would be trainwrecks all set long
It's a live show enjoy it

And also the spotlight solo is from 1980, so it's not all '81 recordings......

I thought I remembered reading something in a magazine awhile ago that quoted Randy as saying he only had 1 Marshall cab in front of him (down in the pit in front of the stage) and it was cranked, but all he could hear was Tommy's snare drum and Ozzy's vocals. I think it was in some special Randy tribute Guitar Player magazine.

The Marshall cab in the pit was basically his monitor, and his other cabinets were behind the castle.

It was all Sharon's idea anyways...

Man if you have only heard the tribute live cd and nothing else live from Randy you will be very surprised. He put in a tOn more fills each and every month as the 81 progressed and even more so in 82.

This is just how he played, the more comfortable he got in the band the more he let gO and that shows over time. Tribute sounds boring to me now because of the lack of fills cOmpared to later shows

The cab was put in the pit because he could not hear his amps in the castle location

Here is a picture of Randy on the Diary tour. You can see he has his Marshalls next to him on the stage.
