DOAM US Tour Rehearsals
I just recently read "Off The Rails" again. After they cancelled the dates for the DOAM European tour the band went straight to rehearsals for the US leg of the tour while Ozzy was still in the funny farm. Rudy mentions that for these rehearsals they learned all the remaining songs from DOAM so that when Ozzy came in he could pick which songs worked best for the live set.
Obviously, they ended up adding only Over The Mountain to the show since Ozz never rehearsed with them for the US leg of the tour. Randy recommended OTM at the last minute and Ozzy said they had to put it at the front of the set as it would be too hard to sing later in the set with the destroyed condition of his voice.
Where am I going with this? Who wouldn't give their left nut to have heard the band rehearsing all the DOAM tunes during this time? There certainly had to be some interesting arrangements there to cover some of those songs live. Can you imagine what Randy was playing to make those songs go over in a live setting? One has to wonder if those rehearsals were ever recorded so the boys could go back and analyze them during those evenings. Especially considering the obstacles they were facing with the new castle stage set-up for the tour. Just sayin...
Yeah...sure, it's a pipe dream but figured I'd give my fellow Rhoadies something else to discuss while we are waiting for the box set to arrive.

Re: DOAM US Tour Rehearsals
Wow, Jim...that's something I never pondered. I wonder if Randy might have had the sound guy roll tape, just for shits and giggles? I would think it safe to assume where Ozzy was temporarily out of comission, Randy would have been running the show, as he was now the senior guy in the band.
This caused me to take this one step further...in working the songs up, that might mean Randy was able to figure what he would play for a real solo for Little Dolls!
Where it seems like they recorded most, if not all of their live shows to review their individual performances, why wouldn't this rehersal be any different??
The mind reels....
Great topic for discussion, Jim!

Fantastic topic of discussion! I'm sure they recorded a few rehearsals. Could this maybe be part of Bob's Grail Tapes -???-

Bob was probably not a part of Diary tour rehearsals discussed in Rudy's book.

Re: DOAM US Tour Rehearsals
But Bob probably has BOO-era rehearsals, right?
Re: DOAM US Tour Rehearsals
Probably not tour rehearsals, it's something you would have to ask him. What he does have is BOO writing and rehearsal tapes. In this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5715. Bob is quoted as saying he has tapes from 1979, 1980 and 1981. So he certainly has material from both albums on there. God I wish I could hear these!!
In terms of tour rehearsals, It wouldn't surprise me if these were recorded for both tours and are on a shelf somewhere forgotten about. It would make sense to record them so they could hear it back to see how it sounds. But in terms of Bob's tapes I'd say it's studio time exclusively.

Good topic, I've brought this up before, one of the times here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4162
Someone would of made some type of recording of these rehearsals, even if it was a cheap recorder. To me this would be as cool as hearing earlier writing and rehearsing.

I agree. I think there's tapes of rehearsals with and without Ozzy.
Re: DOAM US Tour Rehearsals
That would be incredible to hear those. Hear randy noodling around coming up with his solos etc.dinomite wrote:Probably not tour rehearsals, it's something you would have to ask him. Re: DOAM US Tour Rehearsals
Good topic for sure!
Not sure how many progress they made when learnings this songs? Did they indeed end up playing the other songs completely with the 3 of them together without Ozzy? (Randy, Rudy & Tommy) In that case I would expect they recorded something...... One have to ask Rudy I guess.
