Ozzy Documentary and Randy Footage

Post by Silver Rhoads »

Has anyone heard any news other than this? Could possibly be even more new footage of a possible interview! Holy s**t balls!

Taken from: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/ ... -osbourne/

Q. At one point we hear Ozzy and Sharon tell their sides of a fight in which Ozzy very nearly killed her. Are you ever able to fully disconnect from the fact that those are your parents up on the screen telling this story?

Jack. It’s weird, because I felt I was coming at it from a producer’s point of view. When we were working on the project, I stopped calling my parents Mom and Dad. They were Sharon and Ozzy at that point. I almost felt like a spy for a little bit. I’d grown up knowing that story, and they never tried to hide it from us when were kids. That’s not what I found hard. The Randy Rhoads stuff really chokes me up, just from the footage of Randy -– it’s one of the only interviews in existence where Randy is on camera. He’s such an amazingly humble musician. His talents were just completely out of this world, and he got taken from us too quickly. It’s gut-wrenching.

Q. The portion of the film that deals with Randy Rhoads’s death is told largely through archival footage. Were you unable to get your dad to talk about that?

A. I had some really good stuff with him. A couple times I took the camera and I would shoot it, me and him. And it was the one time that for some reasons our cameras completely flubbed up. It was amazing, the conversation we had was really powerful and deep, and we could never replicate it. That’s when we found that footage from shortly after the accident. It must have been a year after the accident, and you can still see it’s very fresh in my dad’s eyes.

It's odd hearing Jack speak about Randy. I suppose the kids, more than anyone else, would know their parents feelings. Maybe they perceive him as a releation who passed before they were born.
Whenever I watched the Osbournes, I found myself looking at the pictures in the background, wondering if there were any, given he wasn't just their guitar player. I had just assumed Ozzy and Sharon locked that part of their life away and didn't ackowledge it unless asked in an interview.
I guess the footage would be of the BNT award from GP. As, I can't think of any other filmed interview with Randy, aside from the QR days. It'd be a fuckin' trip if it was from the seminar he did in PA!
I understand this film is playing at the Tribeca festival in NY until 5/1. Not sure what happens from there, but
I wonder:
1. If this will see immediate release to DVD, or short run in theaters?
2. Will the DVD release be extended?
3. Will the handling of Ozzy's legacy go to Jack when they are gone? Perhaps he's the one to take over the family business...

I have noticed they do have photos of Randy framed amongst photos of family and pets etc. I think $haron or Ozzy mentioned this once in an interview. But it just goes to show you how Randy is yet again coming to the fans through this film. So for everyone who knows who Ozzy is, they will get reminded of who Randy was in Ozzy's life. Which is cool as all his other past guitarists never get a mention. It's always who's in the band at the time in present.

I'm sure they've also had the opportunity to hear outtakes and demos and the original master tapes many times, so they have have a different point of view simply from hearing things the rest of us have not.

My first thought also.

and jack said it "chokes me up"
well the part where Randy says "I dont' wanna stop here.. you know" always chokes me up to hear. I bet thats what it is. Hopefully just a whole lot more of the interview.

I know when I first saw it on a boot VHS in '94, I was like, "Oh man..." Because he was ready to do more and not just say, "I made it. I can stop here." He had other ideas or plans, I would bet.

The only funny thing if it is all one huge disappointment is that it will remind me of Cark Griswald finally getting to walley world and it being closed LOL If that happens maybe CableGuy and me can kidnap Sharon ala Chevy Chase

By the WAY off topic but it was Cableguy's birthday yesterday (Darin)

Darin has done heaps for the RR community over the years with his website (that predates all the main ones), sharing his bootlegs and always supporting the RRCD project. On top of this he is a good guy that is passionate about keeping Randy's legacy alive!

So...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!
Having a break from online activity for a while to concentrate on music. Please email if you need to get in touch. Matt

I've read this review of about the God Bless Ozzy Doc. 8)

4/26/2011

The new documentary on Ozzy Osbourne, titled God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, premiered on Sunday (April 24th) at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City and received a positive review from Entertainment Weekly, which said, "What could have been a glossy, fawning tribute to the most visible face in heavy metal music history -- especially considering it was co-produced by his son, Jack -- actually turned out to be a remarkably evenhanded look at Ozzy's monumental musical influence as well as his less exemplary life as an addict and often-absent father."

Critic Joseph Brannigan Lynch added, "God Bless Ozzy Osbourne may not answer the question 'What makes Ozzy act so... Ozzy-like?', but it's hardly a fluffy tribute. This documentary succeeds in offering a balanced portrait of a man who made many mistakes over the course of his addiction-riddled life and also happens to be one of the most influential hard rock singers ever."

Lynch also wrote that the film "starts with Osbourne's poor childhood in the cramped quarters of inner-city Birmingham, England, and goes up to his long-sought sobriety following the end of the water-cooler fodder reality series The Osbournes."

While the movie does not delve into certain aspects of Ozzy's life -- such as his attempted strangulation of wife/manager Sharon years ago -- frank interviews with his five children "portray him as an absentee father even when he was physically present due to his mind-numbing abuse of pills, cocaine and liquor," according to Lynch.

The film will screen twice more during the festival, on Thursday (April 28th) and Saturday (April 30th). It includes interviews with many of Ozzy's family members, friend and colleagues, including Paul McCartney, the members of Black Sabbath and Motley Crue's Tommy Lee.

Plans for theatrical distribution have yet to be announced.
