I don't like the studio version of that song much, but the Tribute version blows it away I think it really rocks.

As I said previously (back in '06 - apparently this is an O L D thread ), I love his QR stuff, but I really like '70's glam/pop which is the style Quiet Riot had back then.

Originally I said Goodbye to Romance was my least favorite song, I think I'd add Tonight to that.

Too late '80s? THe song came out in 1980 about as early '80's as possible.

I realize this is old, but +1!! This is another example of Randy being way ahead of his time! Being a lead guitarist myself, I love ALL Randy songs. It's great to hear him progress and learn to apply his knowledge. From QR to his last live shows with Ozzy, you can hear how hard he studied and practiced.
I think unlike EVH and Malmsteen who's best work was in the beginning, Randy really put 110% into his playing like Vai did. It boggles my mind to think what amazing feats Randy would be pulling off today. I don't want to piss people off here. I like EVH and Malmsteen, but you can tell that the guitar wasn't their #1 priority. Malmsteen went downhill after Steeler and Alcatrazz No Parole for RnR. Eddie went downhill after The first 3 albums. All I'm saying is Vai practiced 10 hours a day, and it shows. He gets better and more creative every year to this day. Randy would've been such a beast today. Nobody could touch him if he were still alive. Period.

I agree and disagree to all of that. I personally don't think EVH and Malmsteen went down hill as such, but I do think they went from being guitar players who wrote to focusing on songwriting more and some of the edge went out of there playing (esp in malmsteens case)...can't agree about "steeler" to me yes yngwies playing is great but over all that albums is appalling...also rising force is yngwie at his finest, by the time odyssey hit (which I still love) he was as much about songs/lyrics as he was about being a monster player. With eddie I think lifestyle/partying got in the way off the music with DLR...then with hagar it was all about the songs and eddie the musician not eddie the hotshot guitarist IMO

I don't think Ed declined in any way. I think he grew up and matured... his playing shows that. Randy died before he could move past the 'up and coming' stage, I'm sure that if he'd lived, his playing would sound nothing like it did in the early '80's and people would say he declined as well.

I'm stating this from a guitarist's view only. My opinion isn't about songwriting, or popularity in the mainstream. Malmsteen had great riffs, but once you learn his 3 patterns, that was it. He never moved outside of those 3 shapes. Learn these 3, and with minimal modification, you can play anything he's put out to this date. The same with Eddie, although he branched out a bit more over the first 3 albums. Again, I like them both a lot, but I know what to expect when a new album comes out. It gets old.
Vai has more and more riffs, phrases and tricks up his sleeve every year. Literally hundreds. Every new Vai album is like Christmas for studious guitarists. I still feel that Randy had the same mindset, and wouldn't have settled for just having a few riffs at his command. Hell, he was already flying thru all 7 modes with ease, and knew the circle of fifths like the back of his hand. Randy was a natural who would've only gotten better. Just like Vai, his albums would be bought by guitarists the day they came out, with us not knowing what to expect, and dropping our jaws every single time.

I agree with that Efrim,I am not a fan of Vai, but I do appreciate his talent and the pushing of his creativity to the limit - ie not resting on his laurels! Life is so long and there is so much to discover musically it just seems sad to rely on the same formula for so many years

All of Randys work with Ozzy gets a passing grade with me, so I can't say I dislike anything.
However my least favorite would be FLYING HIGH AGAIN.
I may be the only person here who picks one of the "hits" but that song never connected with me... too catchy and too radio for me.
... but I still like it.

I personally think that the Tribute versions of Crazy Train and Believer suck really bad. Maybe he was having an off night or something, but I cringed the first time I heard them!

The Tribute version of I Don't know is sooo much better than the studio album, especially the solo. It just sounds so much smoother and relaxed.

My favorite song though is Mr Crowley. I also like the live version of Revelation Mother Earth, especially the guitar and piano duo before the solo. (The studio version sounds too nasally and bland, but live - holy crap.)

I don't like the hollow sound of the production on studio versions of Crazy Train... one of the reasons I prefer Diary to Blizzard.

The Tribute versions are fuzzy, but my list is based on Randys playing, not the overall sound. Anything with Randy's "extra" playing (fills) is superior to the original in my book.

I must confess that I don't listen to much RR/QR, but I have to give them props for getting a record deal and for playing out any/everywhere to amass their fan base- all at what, 15-17 years old? that's crazy, I was nowhere near that dedicated or mature to do anything like that at that age.
