Re: Randy's Clean Sound
in the studio it would be very ez just recodrd on the clean channel.live would be a pain in the ass i would think he would roll off on his guitar volume also with his volume pedal, keeping the chorus on?then for the hard parts just push everything back up...thats my best guess forgive me if im wrong..
Re: Randy's Clean Sound
I believe you're right Tito. I think I heard/saw a interview with Randy saying he would just roll the guitar volume or just use the foot volume
Re: Randy's Clean Sound
but live it would still sound a bit distorted goin by the tribute album thats why i wasnt sure..thanks matt!!

In one of his interviews he said that he just left the distortion + on all the time. I can't recall which one off the top of my head.

Re: Randy's Clean Sound
depending on how he had it set i can't see leaving it on.
if he had it set for distortion & a high level out say, 3:00 & 3:00(which i do on 1959's & plexis) thats still a lot of gain into the signal...even w/ the volume rolled down on the guitar- it actually overrides the guitar signal w/ standard 500k gibson pots. but his live sound was not that clean anyway.at least not on tribute or any youtube i've heard. maybe he rolled off the volume on the pedal if it was before the dist+ in the chain- to me that would cut off the sustain & sound "farty".
who knows for sure....
the way i always did it was, i hada piece of metal taped to both the chorus & dist+. when i clicked off the dist it clicked on the chorus.. that makes the most sense.
his 10 band eq was before the one w/ the on/off button so it stayed on & he ran his mids high w/ some signal boost so thats why maybe it wasn't so clean.

From the Guitar Seminar (2-2-82):
I think by the first comment "I just keep that on all the time" he didn't mean it literally but just saying that he used it a lot.
So he did click off the distortion+ (fuzz) to get a cleaner sound as well.Fan: Do you have a pre-amp built into your guitar?
RR: No, I have Distortion Plus on the board and, uh, I just keep that on all the time.
Fan: Do you have any trouble with, like, from high pitched feedback?
RR: Yes. Oh, the guy at the last was..just asked me about that. It’s not so much a squeal, I don’t have that problem. But I have a lot of problems with, uh, if you let go for a second, it’ll feedback. I mean. You’ve gotta play so that you’re covering your pickup and if you want to do something quiet, I have to either use the volume pedal or I have to click off the fuzz, because it will squeal.

Re: Randy's Clean Sound
He did say "OR" so it doesn't mean that he did. I leave my distortion plus on all the time (Unless I'm actually recording a clean part "studio" wise) because it's faster for me to just turn the volume pedal down and to switch to my neck pickup (Which I have the volume set low on that so I can quickly switch to clean/distortion without having to push a million buttons with my feet)
