nope not unless ive read like 4 fake interviews he doesnt know much theory at all...

really? i love his tone, much better then any other guitarist... zakk's tone is probably the worst ive ever heard (his new tone) ESPECIALLY when he demo'd the RR marshall.

i like gary moore's tone, slash's is O.K. allen collins has great tone for his style, same with david gilmour, great tone for his style. van halen's is O.K too trebley maybe... tom scholz has cool tone.

Eddie was quite the piano player when he was younger though. I imagined he'd have to learn some theory.
I think the Skynyrd guys all have great tone for sourthern rock. I think as far as metal/hard rock tones....Tony Iommi's current tone is awesome! His 70s tone was a bit too bloated for me. I like Slash's tone too. Van Halen is def. too treble-y for my tastes. SRV also had great tone! He was the reason I bought a Tube Screamer all those years ago.

yeh skynyrd had great southern rock tone def... i HATE tony iommi's tone i the 70s...his tone now is better but not amazing...srv had great tone def. slash's tone is OK nothing amazing...

Gary Moore had an awesome tone when he was doin the heavy stuff .. at that crossover period when he went to the blues and did that "still got the blues " that was the worst guitar tone , it was thin and shrill and had that awful over processed late 80's early 90's metal tone . YUK !!

I think that's some wicked tone on that Gary Moore vid. I agree, we all clearly like different types of tone.

That was a nice tone on that clip , there is a song on that GM album , I think it's called "Walking by myself " .. that is the nasty tone i'm talking about .

We all hear things differently, so it is great that artists all produce things with varying tones, to accommodate such a diverse selection of people :) :)

I love a 'dull' sounding Piano tone. I dislike a bright ringing sound. Same with acoustic (Classical and steel strung) I like it to sound warm and fat (Shaun-don't!)
Some people have said my Classical Guitar tone needs more highs, some people like it the way it is, I like it the way it is too...

You cannot please everyone in this life so have the courage of your convictions and make sure you believe in it.

The one guitar sound i adore is John Petrucci's , it has it all for my liking .. not too much drive but still sounds chunky , nice big lows but not muddy , plenty of definition , not at all shrill etc etc ...

John Petrucci, yes - good, chunky yet clear tone...but also a clever chameleon. If you've ever heard DT's live cover of Purple's 'Perfect Strangers', his dead-on imitation of Blackmore's solo (both notes and tone) makes me wonder why he doesn't vary his basic sound more often. He is clearly a tech-head when it comes to that. I do think that Van Halen is a good argument in favor of the 'tone is in the fingers' debate. If RR sounded good thru a little Fender, then he was apparently one of those breed of rock guitarists who is so comfortable with the feel of the guitar, and so adept at playing exactly what he wanted to play that tone (and tone control) only becomes an issue when playing LOUD - as we are sometimes forced to do (yeah right - twist my arm why don't ya?)

that's my current theory.

Ok, back on topic.... Through the years, saving money and getting different combinations of effects/amps/guitars, I have come to this currently to get my variation of the Rhoads tone. I am using a 1978 Marshall JMP 2204 amp, set to Randy's settings. I have everything on the board that he used except a few things I dont find necessary, like tape echos and delays. I have a Roland Volume run into my Crybaby Wah (wah on left side, volume on right side, like Randy had it) run to MXR Distortion + to MXR 10 Band EQ to MXR vintage Flanger to MXR Stereo Chorus. I have always wondered what the settings were on his Distortion + and 10 Band EQ. Some kids have said max output and minimum distortion but that never worked for me. Setting it to wide open was more accurate for me. The 10 band I used to set to heavy mid boost, but that wasnt quite right. Then I heard Randy used a "frown face curve" which worked for a while, but the more I listened to it, the more I felt it needed fine tuned. And what also gets me is the tone of the 1959RR. That thing has way too much distortion to be used with an MXR Distortion + and 10 Band EQ. I read several places Randy didnt like the cascade channel so he went with the regular amp channel. Thats another point I never understood, cascading the preamp on a 1959....doesnt that basically give you a 2203 circuit? But I have heard them both side by side and the gain is way way higher on the 1959RR so alot more had to be done to it than just moving one wire.
