Re: 2010 World Cup!!!
I just realized that I will be out of the country for the majority of the tournament. Will be able to watch all of the group stage and then maybe part of the next stage. D'oh! Talk about bad planning on my part. I'll have to catch glances of the games as I travel.
As far as the group stages go, I'm really excited for Brazil V Portugal!!!
And in honor of that game...

Nice one!shawn wrote:New Zealand beat Serbia in a warm up game.
We scraped a victory over Japan of 2-1 and both were goals that officially were own goals as they bounced off the defenders! Japan have a Fifa world ranking of 47th I believe and England 8th, so this doesn't bode well LOL

Re: 2010 World Cup!!!
Actually I have to say that I love this side of all major sports events; seeing teams that are not the favourites, bloody the noses of the big teams.
I love underdogs; this is why I am such a Rocky fan too LOL

Re: 2010 World Cup!!!
I love the idea of the underdog doing it.
Scotland have never beaten the all blacks but I would love for it to happen, I would be cheering for them even though they would be beating my team. I may take a beating from several of my mates if that gets out, shhh.

Re: 2010 World Cup!!!
I feel really sorry for North Korea! They filled the form in wrongly and put their favourite striker as their goal keeper. The rules are very strict and it cannot be amended! If they want to play him he will have to play as the bloody goalie. it is very much an Inspector Clouseau style error!
Yes! I can't wait for the USA vs England! America has a fifa ranking of 14th. dmnjr, is Football gaining status in the USA?
Cheers

Re: 2010 World Cup!!!
The short and skinny....yes
I could write a 10 page dissertation about why football (soccer) is not the major player that it should be amongst American sports. Every kid in the US grows up playing soccer. It's THE #1 participated sport in the country. It's like, once high school hits, everyone splinters off into football (american), baseball, basketball, etc. The Big 4 (football, baseball, basketball, and hockey) have all the media, television contracts, and glamour that go with it.
But I will tell this, once World Cup comes around...all the die-hards come out of the wood works, hit the sports bars and soccer-fever commences. When it was here in the US back in '94, I believe that firmly planted the seed for a lot of the success we've seen in international play, from the players to the national team. I remember watching the US vs Brazil match on the 4th of July and thought we had a chance for the upset of the ages....ah the memories!!!!
I grew up playing soccer, as well as my 2 younger brothers and younger sister. We all played for select teams (where you had to make the team, as opposed to signing up and your on). It's in our blood!! The same goes with my friends. The singer of my band is a Manchester United freak and has on his bucket-list to go across the pond and watch one game.
As for myself...I would love to go to England just once, go to a local watering hole, have me a few pints and cheer on the the boys playing on the TV!

Re: 2010 World Cup!!!
ah don't sweat it; Brazil have put the end to many countries dreams..and I still love em!! I hate England losing to them and also can't help not minding it too as they make it all look like a dance when they way they [;ay.
Interesting about football in your country. I know Nicole here too loves it but I get mixed reactions from people from the states, One lady on Suzie's group on facebook said she had neevr heard of the world cup, so I began to wonder.
Cheers
Matt
ps being bias of course, it is quite cool watching a football game in a nice English pub!

Re: 2010 World Cup!!!
Are you serious about North Korea having to play their striker as a goalie, Dweebs?!
How scary! I am sure the actual goalkeeper would have been scared blind with Kaka, Robinho and Luis Fabiano coming at him...but to have a striker put in that position is CRAZY.
Oh well. RE: People in the states and futebol...
It has gotten increasingly popular since the US did so well in the Confederation Cup. Sure, Beckham moving to LA Galaxy raised the profile, but no one really cared until they saw their own American boys beat Spain!
