That is a great video and I wish that when they showed the US festival on TV they would have kept 'OTM' as it was on the day, THE opening song!!!! and the first gig Bob played with the band since his departure in 1980.
I think sadder than almost anything is that we don't have video of Jake playing 'Children Of the Grave' 'War Pigs' or 'Faries wear Boots' I would love to see them.

Cologne she'll wear silver and americard, She'll drive a beetle car and beat you down at cool Canasta. And when the clothes are strewn don't be afraid of the room touch the fullness of her breast feel the love of her caress she will be your living end.
I loved Jake's version of "Fairies Wear Boots", which is one of my favorite Sabbath tunes. Wicked Alliance (the band he had with Mandy Lion) used to do "War Pigs", obviously not Ozzy though. I don't think I've ever heard his version of "Children of the Grave", I've always liked Brad's version of that song to. I would also like to see the US festival performance in its entirety, both Ozzy's and Van Halen's. The show I would really like to see video of is 84' Donington, both of the aforementioned bands.

He did all those tracks with Ozzy in early 1983, 'Faries' was the best and I agree with you it is one of the best Sabb tunes
its got a really bluesy feel with a stunning structure and long musical intro build up.

thank you so much solos for opening up my ignorant mind concerning jake!!!!!!!!even though the sound was bad i got a rush of energy from listening to him on this tape..i have to say jake is one bad motherfucker!!!!!!wow!!!!im totally blown away with this show!!!!!it was awesome seeing bob perform also!!!thanks solos!!!!!!!!
I think Badlands covered "War Pigs" a few times live, now Ray singing Sabbath (or anything else) is a completely different thing, my goodness what a GREAT singer that man was, plus he (Ray) had some history with Sabbath, albiet a very short history. R.I.P. Ray Gillen

Hey solos,
Thanks for that heads up on the VH US Festival footage, they were so awesome during those years, same goes for the Jake link you posted, much appreciated. I also noticed the one clip I have seen of VH at 84' Donington, "Hot For Teacher", would love to find that whole show on video.
Thanks Again,
Ted

I'm sure I was at this show. I don't have a boot of it but I was at the Manchester Apollo gig in Feb '86 when the power cut out, I'd been thrown out a few minutes earlier for taking photos, when I finally got back in I realised the power had been cut as the whole venue was in darkness, then the band came back on and kicked into Over the Mountain, I'd been outside for quite a while but actually missed fuck-all, ha.tedeeoo wrote:[
I only have an audio version of this, is there really a video of this show? The show I am talking about is from 86 with Randy and Phil (must be different than the one you speak of) and it is in England, the power goes out right as Jake starts his solo on "Mr. Crowley", and when it comes back on they do "OTM", Ozzy forgets part of the second verse, but Jake just nails it. This show also has one of the few performances of "Never" on it. Which show are you talking about, and how can I get the video of it?
Don't know what the boot sounds like but it sounded great on the night.

That is so cool Fozzy, the boot is not fantastic audio quality but the band just nailed OTM, I still can't get over how Jake does the tremelo bar pull-ups without actually using one. The video from Rock in Rio that is posted here actually shows how he pulls it off, but to get that down and do it with the ease that Jake does it is hard as crap to do. And I gotta say to, hell of a song that Randy and company wrote, Randy had such a knack for "note perfect solos", you hear his solos and its hard to imagine them played any other way, which in turn makes Jake's interpetations of them all the more impressive to me , cause he found ways to keep Randy's integrity in the songs while showing pieces of his own identity as a player to.

Agree with everything you say tedeeoo, Jake was great at replicating Randy's work.
Its such a shame Ozzy and Jake never worked together again after 1986/87, I often wonder what they would've come up with.
I had the pleasure of seeing Jake a few times whilst he was with Ozz and evertime he was great.
Getting back to Over the Mountain, I never saw Randy play this song live but I saw Brad in December '82 with Ozzy, they started the concert with this song, amazing, blew me away, the full Diary stage-set and Over the Mountain kicking things off, me squashed against the barrier singing myself hoarse and sweating like a bastard, ahh great memories.

Ed in topshape! The solo in "On Fire" is a masterpiece!
Remember this was in '78....
Again: sorry for going of topic.
After 1980 Ed's great guitarsound faded...... completely gone around 1984. Randy's sound was already fading too in '82.
btw Jake is an awesome guitarplayer but his sound was way too thin to my taste. Even when he used EVM12L speakers.

Man I stay off topic, lol!!! Tone is such a subjective thing, I never thought Randy's live tone was quite as good as his studio tone, not saying I didn't like it, it just lacked the "thickness" of his multi-tracked studio tone which is understandable, he more than made up for it with his playing and presentation live.
I always thought Jake's live tone got better as the years went on and it got less effected, especially his tone with "Badlands", to me Jake having a "dryer" tone just worked better for him. I liked his live tone with Ozzy, but I think Jake himself would tell you he was never quite happy with it.
As far as Eddie goes, man you are guilty of blasphemy, lol!!!! Just kidding man, I have always loved Ed's tone but it has changed quite a bit through the years, the guys at Peavey have told me that when Eddie came to the company that his Marshall's were just barely hanging on when VH would tour. His 5150 has some great tones in it but to me it has a bit to much gain, almost to the point of being uncontrollable, but Eddie kind of wanted it that way as I understand it. The 5150 II was almost not released by Peavey, it seems Ed has lost quite a bit of hearing through the years especially in the higher range frequencies (go figure, lol!!), and while that amp was in development he was on tour which compounded that problem even more. I have not heard enough of his new amp (5150 III) to say what it sounds like but I can tell you that he had a shift to more "pre-amp" gain with all of his 5150 amps, I think with his Marshalls there was alot more "power amp distortion" in play than with his later amps and it makes alot of difference in tone.
I always thought John Sykes had a killer guitar sound, especially on the 87 WS album and the first Blue Murder record. Joe Holmes had a really great live tone with Ozzy, it always sounded to me like he just went straight from guitar to amp with very little in between the two, I've read that Joe has several great old modified Marshalls, wish he (as well as Eddie, Jake and John) would come out with some new music. Goodness and you thought you went off topic, lol!!!!!!!!

Absolutely!tedeeoo wrote:I think with his Marshalls there was alot more "power amp distortion" in play than with his later amps and it makes alot of difference in tone.
And I see a pattern when people with great tone (Ed, Gary Moore, Schenker etc.) lost their tone a bit when they stopped using those old Marshall 4-holers. Their tone became more 'pre-ampy' if that's a word? Randy's live tone was great in '81 and started to sound 'pre-ampy' in '82. Maybe he started to use that 'cascaded' thing then where in '81 he didn't, who knows...
I like John Sykes tone on 1987, but still it's not a very dynamic tone, very pre-ampy. (imo) And yep, I think Randy's '81 spring/summer live sound was some of the best in metal history! I never liked his studio sound on Blizzard that much, DOAM is a little better.
btw: it would be very interesting to hear Pete Mertons (Randy's guitartech) speaking. Small chance now regarding the latest developments with the doc......
