Oddity in Ozzy Interview

Hey Guys,

I was listening to Ozzy's interview on Opie and Anthony the other day and they had Comedian Jim Florentine in studio with Ozzy (He Co-Hosts "That Metal Show" with Eddie Trunk on VH1 I believe). Jim is a huge Ozzy fan saying that he has photos with the Blizzard of Ozz band including Randy as well as a signed copy of BOO from all the members.

At one point in the interview Jim mentions that a lot of fans don't realize that Blizzard Of Ozz and Diary of a Madman were recorded at the same time, and that it would have made for an incredible double-album. Ozzy, didn't really disagree or correct him and carried on the conversation as if this were correct...granted Ozzy's memories of this may be non-existant but I thought I'd mention it here as we've all understood that the albums were seperate recording sessions.

by the way...Ozzy tells some hilarious stories in the interview. There is a video on youtube under the "Opieradio" account.

From what I understand, both albums were recorded with a month of one another with a short tour around Europe in between. I believe Diary was in the can before Blizzard was released, but I could be totally wrong.

That's true Paul,

'Diary' was recorded I believe in January, 1981, so it was in the can before 'Blizzard' was released in the US. I think 'Blizzard' was released in England though during that first UK tour in 1980.

Diary was recorded around March-April 1981, Blizzard March-April 1980. Blizzard was released in the US the same time Diary was being recorded, and was released in the UK September 1980. Diary was released in the UK & US Novemember 1981. Some accounts however do say 10/31/81...Halloween!

Bob and Lee played on 'Diary', and both were fired in March, 1981. 'Diary' was in the can before March.

Is that from wikipedia? I bought both records in 1981 on vinyl, and I've always heard that they were recorded very close together, not a year apart.

No, they were definately recorded almost a year apart, Blizzard was March/April 1980, Diary was early '81, just before Bob and Lee got the boot.

Because of the delayed U.S. release of Blizzard, the two albums were released only a few months apart here. That's what prompted the rumor that they derived from the same sessions (even though the albums don't sound very much alike).

I believe (or thought I read) that after the UK '80 blizzard tour the record hadn't been released in the US so Sharon suggested to go back into the studio which would had to of been Dec or Jan. So they still had to record the album, fire Bob and Lee, audition the new band and teach the new songs by April '81. Also, I think I read Randy complained to Delores because Diary was done in 4 weeks and felt rushed. I'd say both the records were recorded within a year. One more thing, I remember being in 8th grade when Diary came out and when Randy died. That would be fall of '81 and spring '82. I'd say Diary was held back but I don't believe it was Halloween but can't be certain. A friend recorded the Diary release radio show premiere and played it in school. I remember when he died, hearing it on the radio that morning and at the bus stop one guy said that it's probably just a joke. It's funny how we try to shield ourselves from the harsh realities...

wow i knew randy progressed quicky from blizzard to diary, but he sounded so refined on Diary, very odd that they were so close together yet he sounded much different than on blizzard(not talking about the actual sound)
