Randy Rhoads Picks and GPQ

Post by edvice »

Here's a link to the Pick Collecting Quarterly that I did some research for...I'll just commit Hare Kari now ok. I consider myself a perfectionist and must be complete in my research on anything Randy Rhoads. I argue with misinformation all the time, so in this case I feel I dropped the ball. I'm sorry to the Randy Community for any confusion this may cause. Here is the post by the editor just posted at the Facebook page and my response is not happy. Oh well, so goes the media! Damage control mode!

Below is the post and direct link from the Editor-in-Chief Brian Bouchard at our Facebook page, I was coresponding with Brian and felt we had a good dialogue going but something was lost in communication along the way. In reality, I learn the hard way that the first information you intimate, complete or not, correct or not, is fair game for print.

Brian Bouchard
Pick Collecting Quarterly is featuring an article on so-called Randy Rhoads picks ... you don't want to miss it!....
Thanks to Ed and everyone else who help us with this article!
This website is dedicated to guitar pick collecting and collectors.

My Comment on his post:
[Ed!]Brian I hate to say this but you said you would send me the article before publishing it and you did not...there are errors. I hate to say this but you did not even make changes in the quotes that I sent you in the [correction] message. You have my original quote on the yellow Ozzy pick not the corrected quote that I sent you informing you that they were called Blizzard in 1979 and that the yellow pick could not be from that time and practice space because Randy had gone to UK in Nov. 79. I've only had a chance to read the first few paragraphs...I don't know what to say?! I enjoyed doing the research and we appreciate the plug but...

Not to go Off-topic (correct me if I'm wrong) but I thought Randy left to UK in november or december '79 ?

Your not going off topic... I appreciate the correction...I wrote that post up quite fast because I had to leave my house. Randy left for UK in November of 79...thanks for correcting me Dutchman. I'm losing my mind over this.

Edit
=====================================
The link is dead because the Editor Brian has pulled down the article until I can review it and make the necessary corrections...he saw that I was losing my mind over this and as he told me that he made a mistake publishing it without me seeing it first. So I'll post a link once we have sorted this out...thanks for understanding.

This is a cool site as i have five picks that randy used and maby even on the day he died. Three Fender, one Gibson and the big funny shaped pick. All were untouched till i got them.

Ed when will it be up at PCQ i have had an email from Brian asking if i'd like to contribute to the site. So i was gathering info on any known photos of Randy's picks along with my friends pick from the Taunton Odeon 1980.

If anyone has any close up pics could you post them up please. I have asked Frank, as i know he has a couple of RR picks and he has posted a thread up at TK. cheers Frank

Shaun in the original article yesterday Brian asked if anyone had any photos of the picks that Dolores had made after Randy's passing and gave out to fans, the one's with his name printed on them in block lettering that Dolores told me about, to send them to him and he would post them. He thought he had a photo and has seen a photo...but obviously could not find it.
I saw that thread at TK...I have all those photos posted in that thread and more but I'd have to dig...I can't recall seeing that one you asked for that Randy had a pick wedged between the strings of a guitar though. He may use some of your photos but it seems like he had photos for everything described in the article....so who knows?!?!?!

Anyway I added your name Gutaridol to my corrections and Ultimate Rhoads link as a general source on guitar picks and memorabilia. I took care of you guys not just because I like all you guys here but because you helped me with council...bouncing ideas of me in our PM's. Wheather he'll print it or not I do not know, I can't see why not I just added you all to the thank you section at the end. People have been very accomadating to me here especially Skezza he's been a class guy and a friend to me off the boards. And you shaun have been friendly as well chatting in PM. I love TK as well, but you guys Oth and Shaun/Guitaridol were the only people to give me some general advice on Randy picks of which most I knew...but it's not all about me! You guys are due credit and I give it where it is due. Shaun you were my council! hehe

Anyway I don't know when Brian is going to publish but the article is frickin great...if he adds the things I sent then it will not be just a pick story but a Randy Rhoads story. I made that clear to him, not that I wanted to add fluff but to add some details to the story like , the devastating date of Randy's passing, Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake and why their names should be in this article...cause they wrote every frickin song with Randy, and Ozzy only wrote a few lines. I explained the whole backround of the $hozzy saga 'off the record' So Brian could understand a little bit more of how things came to fruition. Things like that...I did not blast $hozzy either, I was clear concise and to the point and made it a story we can all be proud of. One of the things I want most even if we disagree on how we are to do it, that we are a united and unified Randy Rhoads community.

Interesting read Ed! 8)

I really wonder if Randy ever experimented with other pics then the Fender medium? I'm still suprised he didn't use stronger picks considering his playing style. Those Fender medium pics sounds good but they don't last very long.

(btw: http://www.ultimaterhoads.coma ? :P )

Every guitarist has experimented with different picks at some point. I'm sure that by the time he was playing professionally he'd settled on the Fender Mediums.

No doubt!
But it would be interesting to know if he used other picks than the Fender Mediums for some period of time.
Not sure, but I remember someone showing a pic where it looked he used a yellow pick. Not sure if the Fender Mediums did appear in yellow too in '81/'82 ?
