I would say that Blues is not about running up scales. Blues is about feel and emotion. Blues is not about speed. If you are to play fast, do it in little flashes, like Gary Moore, but keep the majority of the solo to bending and the emotional sounds you can make on a guitar. Also, don't always bend up just two semitones. If you can effectively bend 3 semitones, you can get an amazing sound. Good Luck Simon. Just use the blues and pentatonic scale, and you will be fine!
Don't forget stuff the blues rock influenced stuff Kirk Hammett, Ace Frehley, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page utilised in their solos. Also, you can bend a half step, a quarter step, or a full two steps up [particularly with Slinky's.] Just remember to really feel the song and the solo will write itself if you just let yourself go.
