Try the Zakk overdrive of MXR.
The distortion+ reissue does not sound like the early ones like Randy used. The older ones had germanium transistors but the new ones has silicon transistors (which are cheaper....), they are are less smooth than the original.
If you can find an old MXR dist+ for cheap you should go for that!
However the Zakk overdrive is much more transparant if that's important to you........
More transparant means that it doesn't mess that much with the sound comming from the guitar. The Dist+ is colouring a lot more. But if the final sound out of the speakers is to your liking it shouldn´t be a problem.
i'd get the zakk wylde pedal. i dont think its overpriced really, and its a good bit of kit.
maybe consider getting a tubescreamer/booster type pedal, its also very transparent and would just give you an extra push over the hill. + A digitech bad monkey is dirt cheap
