randy's classical influence

Thats a really good question and i don't have an answer. We have all heard about RR taking classical leasons while on tour etc. But its never been mentioned to what he was learning or what his favourite pieces were.Only that the teacher normaly got a free leason from Randy... For some mad reason the deer hunter theme, is it Cavatina. That comes to mind for some reason.I think i recall someone from UFO who supported Ozzy mentioned that Randy was playing this backstage. I could have my wires crossed with this one but its as close as i can remember.

It was mentioned in an interview he liked the composer Pachabel.
I think the Randy that knew 'Classical' then, and the Randy that studied Classical Guitar on the road were very different,

He was certainly introduced to the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, as the story goes that he was practising the Etude that Diary burrows from, when Ozzy enthused how great it would be in a recording.

It would be fair ro assume too that like a lot of students he would have been given the whole batch of Etudes simples to study (each study address' a different aspect of Classical Guitar technique) by Brouwer.

This sentence is completely my own opinion but...

When people first delve into Classical music they listen to often music from the Baroque period ie Bach, Vivaldi and maybe Pachabel or the Classical period...ie Beethoven, Mozart Haydn etc etc

(much the same way someone new to Guitar may listen to Clapton, Mark Knopfler and Jimi Hendrix but later with searching find someone like Randy!!)

Then they often seek more...ie more adventurous harmony writing, off the wall melodies or to sum ir up modern music.

The solo to Diary is so different to everything else he did before and also the obvious association with Leo Brouwer my guess is Randy had a load of new Classical influences.

Randy seemed a real romantic!! that doesn't surprise me now you mention him enjoying playing that beautiful piece.

I remember reading (a long time ago) that one of Randy's favorites to listen to was Genesis.

thanks a lot! i used to listen to classical music when i was very young and i want to get into it again. i figured what randy had listened to might give me a good idea of some good guitar stuff. thnx.

Cheers Pat i knew i had read it some where, it was just remembering.Its a great read that Ozzy Osbourne book by Garry Sharpe Young loads of fresh new things in it that i never knew.It was John Williams that played 'Cavatina' for the Deer Hunter film ?.It mentions in the book Stanley Myers i gather he was the original composer ?

check out mozart k581, many of you guys in the 70s who remember mash who should be you all, should know the last episode, where charles gets the north korean band thing and he pisses them off and then plays this, i think its absoluty beatiful, i love it played slow.

also does anyone know the songs by pachelbel specificly, i search and get tons of canon in d. anything else? is there a site that gives you classical artists and there songs?

Why don't you go to the library and check out the Classical section. It is good to ask people, ie on here about things but nothings beats personal experience!

A good friend of mine is a sick violin shredder. I played Mr. Crowley for her and she said heard a lot of "runs" that sound very Vivaldi-ish. I had always thought the same, but hearing it from a violinist solidified my belief that Randy was a big Vivaldi fan probably.

I recall reading in an interview that Randy took classical lessons as a teenager and it did wonders for him...this wasn't Scott Shelley the teacher, right? I don't think he was a straight classical guy.
