I found the following comments in an old book 'Masters of Heavy Metal' edited by Jas Obrecht...
Randy Rhoads: "There are many great players. Eddie Van Halen is great - I don't want to get near competing with people like him"
Eddie Van Halen: "Randy Rhoads was one guitarist who was honest and very good. I feel sorry for him, but you never know - he might be up there right now, jammin' with John Bonham and everyone else"
Pat Thrall: I saw Randy play in Santa Monica on the Blizzard of Ozz tour, and man, the guy blew me away so bad! He actually gave me a bit of a scare....I went backstage, and the first thing I said to the guy was, "Well I guess I better get my paper route back"
It's a good book it's got about 20 pages of comments about Randy & B/W photos most of them taken from Guitar Player magazine (The cover page is of...Eddie Van Halen!)

I have listened to the interview, and I have to tell you that it kinda pissed me off to hear what EVH had to say. Not only was Randy an outstanding guitarist, he was a guitar instructor, and as a instructor he made it a point to learn the techniques and styles of other guitarists, and in turn pass that knowledge on to his students. Randy wasn't "copping" Eddies technique, he learned it, along with several other playing styles, combined them and created his own. After his pompous ass remark, Eddie seems to try to turn it around and admits to learning from other guitarists himself, obviously realizing that he had just put his foot in his mouth, perhaps hoping that his remark wouldn't make the next issue of Guitar World. I think that it should have.
