The Bird (A short story by Simon Fielder)

It was a dark stormy night, on the eve of September and the moon was high. As I looked from my chamber window I could see the trees moving as if they were swaying in time to a silent song. The house, I live in, a rather large house of which I am proud to claim my own, was the most expensive house on the street. It’s majestic large windows and the long gardens of the freshest grass made my house the most grand. But tonight about midnight, the rain smashed through the house, the flashes of lightning crackled through the air while the thunder rumbled, rumbled, rumbled at an ever-slow pace. As I walked from my chamber door by candlelight to the corridor to see the extent of the damage from the storm I could hear the wind blowing but this was soon soused by the sound of flapping, it echoed through the corridor and from the shadows flew a dark, yet mysterious bird. This bird’s wings flapped with great strength and it’s eye reflected the moon as it shone from the windows. I was frozen, I could not move a muscle in my body, it was like fear had hold of me and would not let go, the bird flew closer, closer, closer, still I could not move, I must have been paralysed by the fear that engulfed me.

The bird gave a shrieking cry as it flew closer towards me, the fear was intense I could hear my heart pounding my ribs, I tried to comfort myself but with my eyes closed I wondered to myself will the bird fly away? It did not, I could still hear the bird’s wings beat the air as I closed my eyes tightly I dropped my knees down to the floor I waited; I waited for the bird to fly away and leave me to rest, yet the bird ceased to stop it continued to fly closer, still with fear and trembling I yelled to the bird.

“Oh bird from the darkness, will you spare my soul? If not, strike me down tonight and save my torment!â€Â

I wrote this for my GCSE English, it gained me a B on the test, but a C grade all together.. I hope to make this into a film one day..

The reason a bollocks system can only come up with a B and eventually a C is because the way things are judged academically these days is so by 'tick box' marking method... it ignores outragious creative ability like this.

yep the academic system can be a bit weird at times,

i got a b in systems and control even though my coursework (a radio) didnt work and on the final test i could only answer two out of ten questions. i got lucky there

my general studies test last year pissed me off though i wrote one of my best ever essays only to get an e my friend thinks its because i used black sabbath as an example of artists in my answer, apparently the exam board are snobbish... maybe she was right its ok though it was only an extra subbject my school forced my to do

i got the impression you were more into theatre from some of your previous posts, but theres nothing wrong with being a jack of all trades

I am into theatre, but seeing as its rare for me to have a performance of one of my works, im going to make it into an idependant film, and yes Edgar Allen Poe was an influence in my writings when i write, mainly the influene of seeing the darker side of life.

I have made previous independent films, like Fallen Angel, if i can find out how to put it on here, i would

I love literature...anything ranging from Charles Dickens to William Blake and I love the Brazlian writer Paulo Cohelo.

I think you would like Paulo Cohelo's work Simon. It is very inspiring and uplifting. The Alchemist is his best known book.

Hehe well my two main favourites of EA Poe, is The Tell Tale Heart and The Raven, as for Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol is my favourite, though oliver twist was my favourite when i was little, i can remember getting in trouble, when I knew a character from Dickens called Mr McChokemchild at school, yet I was meant to wirte a description of characters that was on their list.. ooops!

Ill check out Paulo Chohelo, my mums a literature buff so she'll know, it was mum that got me into the works of Shakespeare when i was a kid, I was amazed when mum took me to Shakespeare's house in Stratford Upon Avon, and i quote shakespeare's works when its relevant, I hope one day i get the chance to work at the Globe Theatre, if i dont get to work in film and television.

I find it obscene that students can be awarded 'A' Grades for regurgitating memorised text from classic novels and yet those who create new literary comment receive 'B' or 'C'...Nice work Simon, keep it up & keep it dark!!!

Thanks Shaun, i find it easier to write dark subjects, than i do happiness, its not that i dwell on the pain, but its a way of getting the pains i do have to let out creativly.

I mean its like my vase theory..

If i tell you to think of a vase what would you think of? (if you answer, ill tell you what i'd think of)
