Randy Rhoads Guitar Collection
The Randy Rhoads Guitar Collection
Everyone's seen Randy Rhoads with his famous polka-dot flying V, but what about all of the other guitars he's owned or played? I'm sure there were many, many more than are pictured here, this is a few of them. Some of the information here was found in various magazines over the years, however, quite a bit of the detailed information (names and places) came directly from Kevin DuBrow.
Miscelaneous Guitars
Left to right:
1. Dan Armstong - Taken at Quiet Riot's first show in June, 1975 at the La Canada Country Club. It was Kevin DuBrow's clear Dan Armstrong guitar, which you can see him (Kevin) playing in image number 4.
2. Fender Stratocaster - At the Record Plant in '78 recording Quiet Riot 2. This guitar belonged to the bands roadie Harold.
3. Harmony Rocket - Randy's first electric guitar. Everyone's heard the stories about that one.
4. Black Gibson SG - Apparently, this one never stayed in tune.
5. Unknown dark woodgrain Gibson SG
6. Dean Z - With an unknown Dean guitar (whose production began in 1977).
Flying V Guitars
Left to right:
7. Sandoval Flying V - Randy's first custom made guitar, built in 1979.
8. Dean Flying-V - Randy playing DuBrow guitarist Bob Stephen's guitar.
9. Jackson Prototype - Jackson's 'Original Sin' guitar, Randy's second custom made guitar. Built in 1980.
10. Jackson Randy Rhoads - Randy's third custom made guitar. I'd heard he wanted to call it the Concorde. Built in 1981.
11. Jackson Randy Rhoads - One of a few guitars being built for Randy at the time of his death.
Les Paul Guitars
Left to right:
12. Gibson Les Paul - The old stand-by. Purchased for Randy by the members of Quiet Riot.
13. Gibson Les Paul - Randy with a 1957 Gibson purchased from a guitar tech named Bill Barclay.
14. Gibson Les Paul - Randy with an "unknown" woodgrain Les Paul.
15. Gibson Les Paul - Randy with Paul Raskin's (his girlfriend's Brother) guitar.
Acoustic Guitars
Left to right:
16. Garcia - This guitar belonged to the photographer.
17. Unknown - This is not the same guitar as in image #4. Unknown make and model.
18. Unknown - Who hasn't seen this picture?! Unknown make and model.
19. Martin - Pictured at Sound City Recorders with Dennis Wageman's guitar. Dennis was Quiet Riot's manager.

My Guitar
My guitar is partly designed after Randy's. I use a left-handed Kahler tremolo system on mine which is extremely rare. Nothing like it in the world...

I always thought they were '76 JMP heads, however when I read this:59burst wrote:What year was Randy's Jmp marshalls, his White one and his Black one he used on the after hours??
http://www.marshallamps.com/downloads/f ... ew%201.pdf
so lets say these two amps were from '76 - '80.
Hence Randy used 4 Marshalls heads:
Visible evidence of Randy's modded Marshall?
Randy's Jmp's Not Handwired???
*btw Randy didn't use the white amp in After Hours unless the led of the power switch was broken.....
And there could be very well a third amp behind the stacks.....
The winner of the rat race is still a rat.
Re: Randy Rhoads Guitar Collection
FYI Randy bought at least 2 Fender Stratocasters at Rockin Robin Music in Houston, TX when he came thru on the D.O.A.M. tour. I knew the salesman and it was the talk of the area for weeks afterwards. He paid with his American Express card. I have never seen any photos and I have no idea any other details but I do know they were vintage guitars.

Re: Randy Rhoads Guitar Collection
Info is coming out all the time about various guitars Randy used. The 12 string Gibson Firebird which is pictured in the recording pics from Ridge farm. That was a guitar that Ozzy bought from his PA Dave Tangye. It was giving to Randy, but another guitar that has vanished. It's never mentioned and as far as i am aware was part of his guitar arsenal.
Re: Randy Rhoads Guitar Collection
I recently played the Harmony Rocket when Kelle gave me a tour of Musonia.

Re: Randy Rhoads Guitar Collection
I have been searching the Internet for the very best quality images of Randy's guitars.
I have seen some incorrect info on some photos.
If anyone could supply me with close ups of Randy's actual guitars it would be greatly appreciated.
I have been in contact with John Livzey in regards to his photo shoot and he recalls Randy bring the classical guitar from his Moms studio. If you look at the reflection in the mirror of the backstage photos, you will see the same headstock design!!
If anyone could supply me with the rosette/sound hole art, that would be a bonus!!
Also, the change on the Sandoval from white knobs to black knobs!?!? Any and all info/pics would also be fantastic
HUGE RANDY FAN!!
Thanks to all of you!!

"13. Gibson Les Paul - Randy with a 1957 Gibson purchased from a guitar tech named Bill Barclay. "
I always thought he bought that three pickup Les Paul from a pawn shop.
