FUCK Rolling Stone!!! They are the biggest bunch of corporate hacks to assemble a piece of shit magazine ever. They would not know a guitar from a mandolin. They think they are the ALMIGHTY authority on music, when all they really do is follow the trends and fads of the day within the music industry. They can shove one of Greedy Van Halen's $25,000.00 Frankenstein rip-offs up their collective asses!!! ROLLING STONE BLOWS!! RANDY RHOADS RULES!!!!!!!!

Nice mature reply there. Y'know Zakk Wylde and Dimebag Darrell Abbott both cite Eddie Van Halen as one of their main influences. Ed's black and yellow strat is even buried with Dime.Zakk Daniels wrote:Randy still kicks Eddies drunk ass any day!!! RANDY RHOADS RULES!!!!!!!!![]()
And it was all Ed's idea to release that song first, right? Know your history before slagging the guy. If you dig into the VH world a bit you'd find that Ed had written enough material to fill 3 or 4 records before the first one was released. If you knew much about Ed, you'd know that he's constantly creating new material - he just doesn't release everything for you to hear.CHI-TOWN2 wrote:funny...the review calls Randy a junior-league EVH ....and his playing short on imagination....ummm...Van Halens first big hit was a cover song..their albums are full of cover songs...talk about short on imagination.
Now, there's no way to say this without offending Frank, but here goes... Randy died and became "immortal". He did not live long enough to make a mistake glaring enough to tarnish his image. Had he lived longer, he might still be releasing great music for the masses OR he might be a successful music teacher "who once played guitar for Ozzy Osbourne". There is no way to know, we can only speculate.
Ed lived to regret some of his actions. Ed turned to the bottle - as have many others - and lived to regret it. Ed also chose to enter rehab (but are you going to give him credit for doing that?). Ed also has decided to create the equipment guitar players have wanted since 1978 when Eruption blew everyone's mind.
By the way, Fender owns "EVH" the company. Fender decides what prices to charge for "EVH" products, not Ed.
The most glaring fault that Randy's fans have is to constantly slag Eddie Van Halen. Randy was incredible, but so is Ed. Do Beethoven fans rip into Mozart for not being Ludwig? No, because they appreciate good music.
Oh, and Frank, I never apologize, only clarify. An apology would insinuate that I might have made a mistake

I have to agree with this statement. While I believe that I know why it's done,I can't really agree with it. Ed is,in many ways,a living legend...and,I believe, that guitar wouldn't be what it is without his innovations. The same thing could be said for Randy as well. Both brought something different to the table.RockyRhoads wrote:

Interesting way of putting it. You do know that Ed continued to release material after the '80's ended, right? Seriously, anyone who is a guitar fan should listen to the Van Halen III CD.CHI-TOWN2 wrote:i really dont care about EVH personal problems...im strictly talking about guitar playing....when i think of EVH, i think of a great guitarist from the 80's...but thats it...When i think of Rhoads...i think of one-of-a kind..a freak almost...just one of those rare people...
Here is a good example of Ed not sounding like "that guy from the '80's" - listen to the guitar playing, not the singing... Here is a song called Once from that record. Again listen to the guitar playing and tell me Ed is one dimensional.
When all is said and done, Ed is a talented guy. That takes nothing away from Randy Rhoads. I prefer Randy to Eddie any day, I just think Ed deserves respect for being great as well.
i listened to the songs you posted...sorry, but neither was nothing special...if Randy was sitting there with Cherone, id say the same thing...notice at the end of the first song..he just had to throw in that annoying tapping...Ed, after awhile, pidgoened-hole himself by over-doing that tapping stuff....he still does it...in 30 years, he simply hasnt grown much as a player...sorry...RockyRhoads wrote:Did I get argumentative on the wrong board again?Matthew wrote:I am on UR.TK or RR.TK![]()

I remember reading an interview many years ago where Ed Van Halen was asked aobut the cover songs on the 1st album. His reply was that the record company and Ted Templeman insisted they do a couple of covers to get on the radio. The record company figured that since the original material was so new sounding, and the guitar playing so radically different, that they needed a familiar song for a single to sell records. Ed went on to say that Ted Templeman's reasoning was that if the song was "A hit the 1st time round, that thet were 1/2 way there".CHI-TOWN2 wrote:funny...the review calls Randy a junior-league EVH ....and his playing short on imagination....ummm...Van Halens first big hit was a cover song..their albums are full of cover songs...talk about short on imagination.
Made sense to me.

What's interesting is that you say that "Ed......pidgeonholed himself by over-doing that tapping stuff"
As I recall "that tapping stuff" was Ed's act. It was other guitarists (like Vito Bratta) from the early to mid 80's who copied and over-did Ed's "act" that made the tapping stuff annoying.
Saying that Ed hasn't grown much as a player isn't fair IMO.
No one can honestly say that players such as Iommi, Page, Clapton, etc. haven't grown because they continue to play in the style that made them famous many years ago. I think they continue to "play the way they play" because that's what the record buying public expect from them.
Just my opinion.
