rice_pudding wrote:the 10:00 settings make a lot of sense when you remember that randy used a solid state head when playing live in the QR days... in my experience you just cant clean boost a solid state, so randy would have no reason for cranking up the leve,l in fact in my experience that would just make it sound rubbish.
It would be interesting to know his settings when he was using his Marshalls. As I remember correctly, in the John Stix interview he said he crancked everything really high.
Of course he used the MXR 10 band EQ then also in Ozzy, was wondering, did Randy use the MXR eq when he was in QR ?
that's a good question. any pics or info on his effects board in QR? Nice tip about the solid state amp too. no wonder my Peavy Renown sounded crappy with my DS-1 cranked through it , back in the day (1985)
I didn't know that about solid states.
randy probably changed his settings when he got valved up, i would imagine he cranked the level to full and added a little distortion. Ive used a dist+ on an old 70s marshall, i cranked the level and it sounded fantastic, but i didnt use dist!
the tone had all the drive of randys but not quite enough sustain or... agresiveness (?) so i figure randy would have dialed in a bit to help pull out harmonics and just have a bit more power. In any case the tone i had was heading in the same direction as randys (although i was using a reissue mxr ) Note i also used a 10 band eq.
in the randy rhoads years album there is a list of randys gear used on the album in the sleeve notes. Theres no mention of an EQ. it mentions
MXR dist+
Maestro Phase Shifter
Vox wah wah
Maestro Echoplex
MXR flanger
By the way if anyone here is looking for the randy tone with a solid state ill give you one tip. Use an MXR 10 band eq but not a dist+. Using the amps own distortion and the eq you can get close to randys tone (depending on the amp i spose), this is probably as randys tone was more arguably more about the eq and mids than distortion. IMO If you use any kind of dist/OD pedal in front of a solid state it just makes it really dirty and you lose all clarity

I saw a bit in the collection bit saying 10min lesson but you couldnt click on it... rather annoying!!
The Collection page is just my Collection I have an audio page with a lot of downloads, but I don't have that one up yet. I do have it on my computer I believe, so I'll try and upload it later to the page. I do have the Seminar up, although not yet listed on the page.
Not all of it is "Clickable" yet. I still have much to upload. The Ozzy era shows that are not clickable on my site, you can find here, thanks to Trigger and Skeeza.
*EDIT* I'm uploading them now. I'll post the links when they are up

Frank, you and some of the former students need to write a book with these stories. Lots of his character revealed here.
now thats something i'd like to see...
These stories are great. It would be something to try and find as many students and friends like Lori to write their recollections. I imagine the documentary will do some of this but there's always room for more Randy.

interesting idea. lori could probably fill up a book all by herself. funny thing, just when i think i've shot the entire wad, a good question will jog another recollection. we're talking thirty year old files here.
