hey tom. my contact with randy really dropped off to sporadic calls when he left for england. when he was in town he would call us over to the house to visit but everything was kept on a friendship level, no road stories. i think he needed to relax and forget "business" while he was home. so, no, i wouldn't know what challenges he faced at that point. i'm guessing he was still the perfectionist. it was his nature, y'know?TAB wrote:Frank, after Randy left for Ozzy, how much contact did you have with him? Sorry if you have stated this already in another thread. Just from what you were saying where Randy would sometimes be hard on himself in the QR days, his playing seemed to jump when Blizzard was recorded. Do you think the things that made him mad in QR were overcome and probably new advanced things challenged him angered him. Did he ever say anything?

hey frank,
i was listening to a tape of one of randys guitar lessons the other day on diary of an axeman (actualy i think it was one of your lessons
!!!) and it got me thinking, what was the purpose of taping lessons?
was it so students could revise lessons at home (which would be great since you cant refer back to a teacher outside of a lesson like you can with a book) and if so how useful was it?
sorry if this has been asked before...

yep it certainly seems to be the most likely explanation, but im curious as i know of no other teachers who have done this which seems odd to me (then again i've never had a guitar teacher so what do i knowsiro_angel wrote:frank will probably agree with me here but i think they did it because so that the student can refer back to the recordings if the student missed anything and it can also help with practicing.

Ive had two, one who would never allow me to learn any way but the "correct" way, him patronising me constantly, and you've done it wrong DO IT ALL AGAIN!! even if its one mistake DO IT ALL AGAIN! and then to tell me that a seven year old he taught was better than me and gibbering on how much i never will be able to pass the grade one (very basic guitar)rice_pudding wrote:

but the second, is like Randy Rhoads, patient, calming influence, no pressure and believes in the student's capaility to exceed, and he has put me on grade 6 stuff, shame seeing as im low on money atm i cant have anymore lessons till i get a job! but i have improved so much thanks to him believing in me and he was kinda amazed at the fact even though i struggle with rythmn and learning songs 100% right, i make up for it in feeling.

it was recommended by randy. there was so much material, you couldn't absorb it in one sitting. thanks to that, i have several hours of randy.rice_pudding wrote:hey frank,

Hi Frank and everyone, I just signed up, great place ya got here!frank wrote:okay here's one i've never seen before in print. stupid trivia stuff i know but when randy was executing a particularly difficult passage (solos included) he would purse his lips and move his mouth like a rabbit. that's how i knew he was giving it his all.
Anyway, I noticed Randy doing that on the After Hours tape, in the middle of Crowley, he makes the "rabbit face". thanks so much for all the stories you and Randy Magic have shared, unbelieveable!! Do you still have the fender champ? and was it a silverface? I have a 62 princeton and an old script mxr, and when I plug my les paul into them... yes!!! thanks for the mxr settings as well.
yes it did! I already had started to use it as a clean boost, but I had the dist at 10 o clock and the level cranked. I like knowing that all randy needed was the barest setup and still.... it really is all in your hands!
I have really enjoyed reading yours and randy magics posts. I love the dialog about not being afaid of your guitar (either you or RM post). good stuff.
I honestly believe that simple set up was the basis of his later choices. Like the use of clean speakers (altecs) vs dirty speakers (celestions), just like a fender. Crank it up to get the tone out of the amp and implement the dist box to accentuate/color it, or push it farther. ya know? I have also taken that set up and then put it through my 50 watt Marshall jubilee head, to go for the ozzy sound. I have the jubilee set up to sound like the princeton to start, and then tweak it from there. so when I want to play harder stuff, that's the rig I go for. fun stuff!!! I love gear by the way, can't you tell! haha! for me, my les paul and strat, with my 62 or jubilee is all the amp and guitar I really need.
thanks frank!

the 10:00 settings make a lot of sense when you remember that randy used a solid state head when playing live in the QR days... in my experience you just cant clean boost a solid state, so randy would have no reason for cranking up the leve,l in fact in my experience that would just make it sound rubbish.
