GMW PDV how much are these..

I seen this on ebay and ok it is a custom made guitar. But is this not stupid money to pay for a giutar.

DEFINITELY stupid money for a guitar, in my humble opinion. I feel that too much emphasis is being put on having the same guitar as your hero these days. All the guitar magazines spend more time discussing which amp, guitar, effects, mics, etc. and not enough time discussing the music. Spending a fortune on a polka-dot flying V won't make anyone sound like Randy, but practice will.

This GMW Rock Replica Randy Rhoads polka dot V guitar features neck-thru-body construction with a quartersawn maple center blank and alder sides. The 21 fret, 25 1/2" scale rosewood fingerboard has pearl bowtie inlays, 6150 medium jumbo fretwire, a bone nut and a 1 5/8" wide nut width. The guitar uses a steel block vintage style bent-plate tremolo, Schaller M6 mini tuners, black Gibson pickup mounting rings and solid creme DiMarzio PAF (DP-103) and Super Distortion (DP 100) pickups. A custom made G & G Quality case (form-fitted, crushed blue velvet interior, black tolex exterior hardshell) is included. You may substitute white barrel knobs for no additional cost. $2400

Of course this is cheap compared to the EVH frankenstrat replicas...

At least it's a lot better deal than buying a Sandoval copy for + $7000 .
And the GMW looks closer to the original than the Sandoval replicas.

But maybe the Sandoval has a better tone? Who knows!

I could probably build one like it for less than $1000.
i think I spent $6-700 on the star-guitar I built for myself,
with the paint being quite pricey. now I've found the same
kinda paint for approx 1/3 of the price.

What type of paint is normaly used on guitars is it cellulose based or polyurethene ?.Obviously it will have to be hard wearing,do the guitars go through a system of base coats primers etc ???

I think the seller confused the US dollar with the british pound.
But $ 1750 is a good price for that guitar if it's in good condition. (check the GMW prices)

vintage guitars often used cellulose, just look at how
Randys LPC aged I use polyurethane, because it's
much more durable.

You have to put on a base-coat of primer, which I forgot
on my star(won't happen again) and then add a few more
layers of the color of choice. Doin' burst and such can be
a little tricky if you're not experienced though.

but doing a PDV, I'd probably start with the basecoat,
then do the white, then add some sort of mask for
the dots and finally add the black

Yeah but guitars can grow on you if you are always looking at pictures of your heroes playing them. After I watched afterhours for the first time I thought the polka dot v was the coolest thing ever, especially in Suicide Solution. If someone offered to sell me one (and I could afford it) after watching it I would have probably bought it over a different guitar.

Also, the equipment is often something that many musicians from all sorts of different styles have in common and so magazines are gonna talk about it because it's common ground and so a lot more people are going to be interested in reading it rather than if they just do a load of pages on some band who appeal to a much smaller audience. Like if they talk about a new strat on the market, you'll get Metal fans, blues fans, maybe Reggae fans? A whole bunch of different people will be interested in it. That's just from that point of view I guess.

I understand your point of view on this.

Let me put it this way: In the early '80's when I first started playing, a LOT of guitar players started commenting in interviews that they realized that their "sound" came from their hands and not the equipment. So a lot of guitar players started being more minimalist in their equipment choices. The focus became more about how to make the song into a song rather than how to get the tone of a particular song.

Things have come full circle and more people seem to be of the opinion that a specific guitar/amp/effects combo will make them more like their hero. This plays into the hands of those who sell "signature" equipment.

I just think that reasonably priced instruments could be produced if the manufacturers would stop preying on peoples desire to follow their favorite star.

EVH messed up the industry for a bit when hemade his strat, then a lot of folks followed suit so they could be like Ed and build what they wanted. That doesn't happen so much now. The brand name is all important again.

Looks great from here! Till now this one looks like the most accurate I've seen so far when checking the placement of the dots.
It's even closer than the GMW in that respect.
