John Sykes and Mike Portnoy
According to Eddie Trunk the material these 2 have recorded sounds like a cross between 87 Whitesnake and the first Blue Murder record, this could be REALLY great!!!

Sykes is an awesome guitar player... talk about a guy who's underrated! He's light years beyond Zakk Wylde but virtually unknown.

John Sykes is great! He put David Coverdale on the map with '1987'.
I swear Zakk got his 'pinches' from him.

The winner of the rat race is still a rat.
Re: John Sykes and Mike Portnoy
Agree with all of you, John is a monster player, pretty sure I remember Zakk naming him as an influence somewhere. John has maybe the best vibrato of all the hard rock players and for that matter of everyone else to!!! I like the fact that Portnoy is a singer and lyric writer to, I hope they get a monster bass player/singer. Can't wait to hear this!!

Sykes kicks ass. Can't wait for this. I have read that Randy was one of Sykes favorite new guitarist when BOO was released.
Re: John Sykes and Mike Portnoy
Well I guess we won't be seeing Sykes in this band. Eddie Truck said Sykes is out and maybe richie kotzen is in.
Re: John Sykes and Mike Portnoy
Wasn't Billy Sheehan on bass?

I beg to differ on both points thereThe Flying Dutchman wrote: John Sykes is great! He put David Coverdale on the map with '1987'.

DC was already a pretty big name at that time
from his tenure with Deep Purple and all the
Whitesnake albums released BEFORE the s/t one.
I might even say it was the other way around

... and Zakk, while pretty pinch-happy, never once
mentioned John Sykes as an influence.
You know... The pinches came from his teacher Dave Dipetro
back in New Jersey. And don't forget that Randy used to do them as well.

Re: John Sykes and Mike Portnoy
Who's to say Dave Dipetro wasn't influenced by Sykes?
As for Coverdale, Sykes' playing on the '87 Whitesnake record did put him "on the map". Yes rock 'n' rollers who had followed Purple knew of him, but the general public didn't know much of him prior to Sykes' guitar playing and Tawney Kittaen shaking her hot ass all over his videos on MTV... so I'd say Sykes' was instrumental in putting him on the general population map.
It's a shame that Sarzo/Campbell/Vandenberg got the credit from MTV viewers for the songs....

Re: John Sykes and Mike Portnoy
Not really sure to tell you the truth... I had heard him on the Tygers of Pan Tang Spellbound record and LOVED him with Lizzy on Thunder and Lightning... then he turned up on the Whitesnake record and I loved it as well... never really analyzed his playing to be honest, I just find him to be light years beyond Zakk as a player.Stiltzkin wrote:How pinch-happy was Sykes before 1987?Paul Wolfe wrote:Who's to say Dave Dipetro wasn't influenced by Sykes?
