I was very excited to find a guitar USB cable the other day so that I could work on recording some ideas...
It's called the Lightsnake and it sounds very promising. Here is the manufacturer's page about it...
Unfortunately, I get a LOUD buzz and hum when playing and the flashing l.e.d. causes a clicking in the recording. I have found that there is a message board dedicated to this issue and many others have had similar problems...
So far I am less than thrilled... we'll see if they get back to me on the problems I've encountered.

I use a GuitarPort by Line6... (Darn couldnt find a sick emotion ). Anyway, I am not a real big fan of Line6 at all. I cant be doing with amp modelling or any of that. For me, you need the real thing, to sound like the real thing. Anyway, I thought i would give this a try, seeing as i wanted to plug into my PC so i bought the full works, the Line6 guitarport + rifftracker. Its absoloutely fantastic! It has hum/hiss reduction so you lose all that nasty his you have, it has all these great effects and it was only £140. Its one of the best pieces of kit ive bought in a long time! I didnt think that USB cable idea looked too impressive because theres a soundboard idea, where you simply plug the card in and record in soundrecorder, but it has no effects + you need a pandora or something to make some overdrive etc. Not too good
Well, I heard back from the company and they said that it sounds like a defective cable and they will replace it. So the jury is still out.
I am running it through a Digitech GNX2 pedal into Cool Edit Pro rather than "Sound Recorder" so I can mess with the signal that way.
I'll look into the Guitar Port thing once I pay off the Les Paul (the wife is understanding about that purchase, but not exactly happy about it )...
I would like to finally get around to writing a song or two of my own. I have plenty of ideas, but I'd like to be able to record the ideas, find the arrangement I like best, and then burn it to disc for posterity... I thought this "Lightsnake" would be the key - and it still might - but if not, maybe the Guitar Port will do the trick.
Okay, so I got the replacement Lightsnake weeks ago but never got around to trying it until tonight... it works really well! I recorded a short prgression to see if it worked and that buzz I used to get was gone, the recording sounds just like the sound from my amp, and the whole setup is simple to work with.
I looped the progression I recorded and practiced soloing over it, I still suck at soloing, but it was fun. Now I need to figure out how to be able to monitor the recording while I play. The way I did it tonight, I couldn't hear anything but the guitar (like it was unplugged) while I was recording, and then had to listen to the recording to hear what I got. If I can figure out how to hear it while recording, I'll be able to loop a prgression on one track and add parts on other tracks - Cool Edit Pro has 32 tracks available. I'll also be able to funk around with Fruity Loops and add a bit of drum track to it.
Now, this is NOT a CD quality recording, but it is better than a tape deck - AND I can edit things this way until I get what I want.
So if anyone is interested in a simple way to record themselves, the Lightsnake works well for a relatively low cost.

One thing i thought about this at first site was im guessing its USB 2.0, if plugged into a USB 1.0 or 1.1 socket would people get a lagg, as i tried one of these in a shop (possibly not lightsnake) and there was like a big delay between the guitar and the laptop. just a thought!
