I came across the word 'frenemies' in the Times at the weekend. The author described some friends in her life that sympathised and commiserated when things were going bad (but seemed to relish her misery), yet almost seemed really pissed off when things were 'on the up for' her LOL.

These same 'friends' often left her feeling drained and asking the question "why do I put up with them?"

Does anyone recognise this phrase in anyone they know? Suzie and I have laughed hard at how accurate it describes some people in our lives

I can relate to that , I think the majority of Facebook and Myspace users are like that .

Here is an example of a real life frenemy. The names/circumstances have been changed...
Suize and I have a 'friend' and the evening often goes like this. We knock on the door with wine and gifts and the first thing that happens is the little girl (an obnoxious little madam) chucks a toy at usually me
Then we sit down in the lounge (with his wife who doesn't say a word from then until the end of the evening) while he gets the drinks ready. As the evening goes on the child dominates the whole evening interupting any adult conversation with crying and attention seeking bahavior which he always gives into. The mother laughs finding it all cute and endearing.

Also despite being only 9 she stays up till really late and the music is constantly being turned off so she can put her films on which she has a tantrum if you don't stare fixated to the screen...
I just smile while inside thinking "spoilt brat she needs a goog telling off". Anyway he (the father) doesn't use any discipline and she just takes over the evening being a precocious pain in the ass. Then, as the evening goes on he gets drunker and drunker and more and more opinionated about everything and slagging of what he likes and doesn't. he tends to have opposite views on everything from music to politics and is not a live and let live type LOL

This is all par for the course. Suzie, not so good at biting her tongue usually gets into a 'dicsussion' asking him to clarify why he feels so strongly about something etc. I usually have to try and throw in jokes and stuff to make them not kill each other and veer back on course.
We leave and on the way back always say "god, Never again, that was awful!" ...

Then two months or so will go and he will call saying how fantastic it was seeing us and usually have a cd he has recorded for us or a newspaper cut out of something we are interested in.

Thus, the cycle of the frenemy continues.
