I wish was it was for my music but it was instead for an ordinance they are trying to pass in my local city to protect pedestrians, joggers and cyclists from car drivers who don't give at least 3 feet of space to those on their right side. I think we need something like this because there are places where no sidewalks exist. And this is just in my neighborhood. What kinds of laws do they have elsewhere in the world to protect the traveling non-motorest? Anyone?

That's a step in the right direction .. first and foremost is a law that bans the use of texting and cell phone use whilst behind the wheel .

the easiest fix would be to widen the roads ...

although think about it, if you were giving those 3 feet, what if you meet
another car ?

They are banned here in Britain.

In Washington state, most areas have bike lanes to provide that 3 foot cushion.

Stiltz, if roadwork elsewhere is like it is here, it'd tak a thousand years to slightly widen the roads! As for meeting an oncoming car, I'd say that falls under intelligent driving to know what's ahead... unless of course the driver is texting while drinking and singing to that damned radio :)

You Are Lucky Paul

You are really lucky Paul. I think in Texas bike paths are an afterthought. Most of our roads don't even have shoulders except on the major freeways. Or maybe it just seems that way to me. I know in Europe you in far better shape than most of us bloated Texans. (San Antonio was #3 in being the most obese in the U.S. last year.) The only time any of us run it seems is to get a taco or to get some beer. :)

I agree Paul. It would take time and a whole lotta money to widen the roads.
However, even if we are aware of possible meetings up ahead,
we can't predict what the other driver's doing.

luckily though, on most highways in Sweden, bicycles and pedestrians
are prohibited from traffic.

I remember in the 80's on TV seeing an American tourist complaining that the roads in Britian were not long enough and had to many bends, the answer that he got was this 'that is why British cars have steering wheels'
I am not sure where i saw it and if it was scripted or just an observation but it made me laugh.

Sounds like something Jeremy would say on " Top Gear " in his overtly British pompous bastard accent

Yes it does sound like him, I have a love hate thing with Jeremy! I hate how pompous and right wing he is but I do love how incredibly cheeky he is!
I have the accent like him, but it depends how you use it
