Vegan or Vegetarian ?

Post by RRfish »

I thought it would be interesting to ask the question as to how many on this forum, as well as TK, and KG's new site.....

How many members are Vegan, or Vegetarian and anti-alcohol ?

I was pseudo vegetarian for a little while (the only meat I ate was fish) but my doctor told me that I was anemic and could not afford to not to pass up the iron in meat.

So cool that you responded to this ND, did you know that if you have whole grains, lentils, tofu and things like pumpkin seeds, humus from chick peas, combined with veges and fruit high in vitamin C, it covers the normal amount of iron a person needs. Anemia was on my Mom's side of the family so it was always a worry, and I can understand your concern. Eat lots of dark greens my dear and thanks for your post......... It will be cool to see how many posting here have tried that life......... I have to be honest I absolutely love fresh fish.......Cheers :fish:

Hi RRFish

I haven't eaten meat or fish since I was 5. I wear leather though.

I survive on pizza, pasta, Indian and Mexican food. I eat lots of salad and my 5 portions of fruit and veg a day too:)

Jessica has been vegatarian since birth and our son Oscar will be, I am not vegatarian but I accept not bringing meat or fish into the house but I do eat meat sometimes when we are out. However my meat eating is becoming less and less as time moves on.

Yeah, I know some vegetables are loaded with iron...I already eat a lot of hummus and dark vegetables. I think I eat beef maybe once every 4-6 weeks. Chicken I eat a bit more often, but like Ian, I eat less and less meat as time goes on. I don't do it cause I think it's healthier or I love animals or anything like that...I just don't really like the taste! Besides, beef sort of gives me indigestion. I will never be able to give up sushi or fish though...it's the Asian in me!

Just started supplementing my diet with lentils -for protein.
I eat dark green salad daily as well as cantaloupe.I buy organic as much as possible.Almost always for green lettuce.
Used to eat 1 single big portion but now i divide it up into 2 or 3 servings across the day.Smaller portions are not wasted and are used better by your body.
Havent eaten red meat in 15yrs or more.Badly processed here in the usa. Also creates more greenhouse gas than cars and is basically terrible for the environment like cutting down rainforests for grazing.Stopped eating salmon cuz its farmed and the fish feed is super dangerous.A plant diet is the safest way to go.I still eat chicken though.

Where did that info come from ? Greenhouse gases Rain forests ? If we let the animals breed and didn't eat them what would we do with them. Just have a mass cull every now and then and burn the carcases. They'd be roaming the streets like in India Asia. If sheep and cattle etc didn't get eating the planet would be overrun. I remember when the mad cow disease hit the UK it was funeral pyres on a massive scale. Nature as we know is one big massive food chain. If you take the insects away the birds suffer starve and die. If you kill all the birds the insects become an infestation and desease spreads like wild fire. So do we all turn into veggies ?

Cows and pigs are domesticated and mass produced.I dont know if they were ever wild animals or a normal part of the food chain.I dont think they are vital to the food chain and i dont think there are any species whose existence would be imperilled without them.Cows, pigs pollute water and release insane amounts of methane.Ive read cows are the biggest greenhouse gas source.

The cow and livestock population is astronomical and is artificial not natural .
The natural world would thrive without cows.Cows are nice animals and tasty if prepped right but they require vast amounts of land, water. The rainforests in the amazon are mostly being destroyed for cow pastures.

cows produce and release mass amounts of methane gas, daily.
cutting down rainforests that cleanse greenhouse gases compounds the problem exponentially.
read up on how cattle is produced and you will see how gross it is.'Beyond beef' is a good book-just read the intro at the library-that should be enough.Did you see the slaghterhouse video where the cows were wallowing in their feces and one of them was being pushed around by a forklift?Slaughterhouses have more security than fort know cuz the meat industry doesnt want the masses to see how their meat is made.

I would love to eat a good steak once in a while but the meat today scares me.

Everyone is open to their own opinion but don't go saying things that are totally outrageous have you visited every slaughter house ?. I think animals for the table are killed in a quick humane way. It is done under licence and to the book ok some slaughterhouses are not up to the level. But you either eat meat or not, but don't go waving your protest banner because of the production of meat distroying the planet please. I can think of many other issues to mention but i hate being put on the spot with the, i told you so.. You have to look into this without being blinkered or fed full of pamphlet bullshit. If that was the case we would all be munching on grass to save the planet.

I have cut back a bit on my meat consumption as well. I am trying to keep my cholesterol in check as well as my Blood Pressure. I eat salad all week long for lunch, but once every two months or so I go to the butcher and get a 2 pound sirloin and cook that bastard up to a nice red Medium Rare state and devour most of it. Then I enjoy a nice glass of Maker's Mark whiskey straight up and follow it with a beer or two. Otherwise I drink Jack Daniel's during the week. Maker's Mark is a bit more expensive and a bit more smooth. Goes well with BEEF!!!!!!!

Speak for yourself. Are you exercising willful ignorance or what? What do you know about slaughterhouses?Do you know what percentage of meat is fda inspected? Its miniscule and the standards are lax at best.Again read up on it.Ever heard of e coli poisoning?Salmonella?Mad cow?
Read a book on it like 'beyond beef'.You might learn something.Dont be so naive. You sound like one of those global warming deniers trying to say the poles arent melting before our eyes.

Here's a link to the intro of 'beyond beef'

http://ondix.com/pdf/docs/college_free_1071117912.pdf

Read it and learn. There's also a book by a former cattle rancher about the meat industry.

Do you eat bacon, pork, ham?I used to work in a restaurant and all our foodscraps, and food the customer didnt finish eating would all be scraped off into waste bins that would sit and rot outside with rats running around. Those bins were picked up and sold to pig farms who feed their pigs with it and then you buy that bacon etc at the grocery. This means you have eaten this rotting garbage. The fda doesnt care what livestock is fed and they dont inspect hardly ever.Cows wallow in their defacation and and are even fed dead animals to fatten them up asap.Thats how you get madcow and the runoff that spreads e coli to spinach, lettuce and other crops on the farm field.
You are what you eat buddy.Enjoy.

I've gotten a lot better over the years. I have never walked away from meat all together, but I do eat a lot better now. Hats off to those that can do it. What can I say, I live in Texas. We have a steakhouse on every corner...
