listening to Malmsteen and then this interview, it doesnt sound like Rhoads had influence on his playing.
RR was definitely more Blues and Rock + precision.

double post!

anyway, Sweden was isolated from certain music, which is true.
In New Zealand there was a ship in 1966 that went beyond the 3-mile limit, then broadcast music that people wanted to hear = "Pirate Radio", playing Black Sabbath etc. The Radio stations were controlled BBC style/Gov radio.

No doubt Malmsteen grew up in a closed society. So, when he says he wasn't influenced by certain players, it is true.
That interview is great. explains a lot and changed my view. I still like RR and Jake tho

RR has structure, contrast and tasteful fills, all contained within a 4- 5 min song. His solos take off.

Rick Beato has some great interviews on YouTube worth checking out. I didn't know Nuno Bettencourt was so good. On the spot playing, no smoke and mirrors, just interview and twiddling on the guitar.

I'm really surprised how popular these videos have come, with the likes of Rick Beato. Interesting discussion.
