In 1990 I went to see David Bowie on his retirement tour where he retired his old music, it was the sound and vision tour and what David did was shrink the band down to a 5 peice (including Bowie himself).
What stands out so much to me was that they opened the set with an intro of 'Ode to joy' then straight into 'Space Oddity' and all you saw was Bowie standing behind this huge silk screen in a spotlight (you couldn't see the band).
As musicians you will know how hard it is to keep a song in strict time even if the band speed up and slow down together, Bowie had done his own backing vocals as well as some projected images that from time to time appeared with him and sung the vocals or backing vocals.
What stunned me most was that they were able to keep these 3 things in time Live band, backing vocal tape and projected image.
It was breathtaking, in this video you can't comprehend the sheer scale of the projected image but skip forward to around 2mins 50 seconds and watch the way Bowies genius brought the 3 things together.
