He Ted
I believe and have done through my adult life that capitol punishment is barbaric regardless of the crime, I do make an exception for Nazi war crimes where a continent and whole races of people were the victim of a few perverted immoral men.
Society is judged by the way it handles its criminals and areas like Scandanavea have better prison/punishment sytems than Britain or the USA! with much better statistics of non repeat offenders.
I think that this 'Eye for an eye tooth for a tooth' was best summed up by Gandhi when he said 'if we live in a land where the rule is an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth we will live in a land of blind toothless people'!
I knew a man (Scott) who had learning problems and he became friends with a drug addict who took advantage of him, he used him to buy the drugs that funded his habit.
One day as my friend was at this drug adicts house a few of the addicts other friends came around as they smoked Marajuana they started to threated Scott and one by one they punched him in the face! He didn't move and in the trial they admited that they told him if he he moved they would kill him!
The torture went on until he passed out and continued for at least 3 hours, his corpse lay there until the neighbours reported a smell that they believed was broken drains. The Coroner didn't allow Scotts family to see him because Scott couldn't be recognised they had hit him for so long that they had puched through his face into his brain and his head was hollow.
so to answer you Ted do I think that they should face the full weight of the law YES!! do I think they should be executed NO!!
What is more Scotts family didn't want, or ever state that they wished his barbaric imoral killers dead.
Prison is the best place for criminals even killers what is wrong is when we so called 'Civilised' people act as we did prior to becoming learn-ed. The almost ritualistic disposal of our worst criminals is unpleasent and part of that far distant past, a past we grew away from in the dark ages.

Hey Ian,
Not calling you out on anything, nor am I saying anything for or against capitol punishment, merely asking the question. I will say that I am not so sure most of the world takes your view that " the almost ritualistic disposal of our worst criminals", is a part of our far distant past, and I can't really see that society is judged by how it handles its criminals. Nowadays, it seems as if there is no judge or consequence to society's actions, which could be a whole other thread unto itself.

I accept your oppinion Ted and I had not been honest it wouldn't be worth writing anything here at all, I realise we will all have differing views, and mine are very much my own and have not been formed by listening to others.tedeeoo wrote:Hey Ian,

Perhaps if anything has swayed me it has been my life long interest in History and Politics both of which influence capitol punishment now and in the past.
I accept your oppinions as you do mine which I appreciate.
