damn alex thats really strong to suggest that im close minded as far as different music is concerned?you dont even know what type of music i am into...btw i havent had a chance to listen to your clips as i will now and very open mindedly...brb...ok i checked all 3 and the one i was most impressed about was opeth the drapery falls....i liked how the singer changed from very soft to hard!!!the music is beautiful and the singer really compliments all the melodic parts to the song but i have to say i was so into the song until 4:58 when he got loud i wanted to grab a crucifix and some holy water it scared the shit outta me!!!seriously the other 2 didnt do it for me but opeth is really nice!!!!i liked it....

I love this stuff.
Watain, Mayhem, Dissection, Nattefrost, Darkthrone, Burzum, Gorgoroth, etc.

I think 99% of the cookie monster vocals/bands that come out of the US are shit (as are all these "metalcore" bands), but a lot of the stuff from europe/scandinavia is awesome....there is just a different sound to the vocals that is instantly recognisable

Sometimes I wonder if the extreme metal community is the only heavy metal genre still coming up with fresh, new and inspired music?[/quote]
I think that somewhat depends on your perspective and personal taste, The extreme metal stuff intrigues me in alot of ways but I can't say that the majority of it is fresh, new or inspired. But, I can say that exact same thing about most any form of popular music, within each jaundre of music you always have some bands that are just on a different level from the rest and then you have a large group that really sound similar to each other. Thats just my opinion, I really like some of all of it, I think every form of music whether you think its good or bad has something to offer if you just take the time to listen to it.

You are much more up on extreme metal than I will ever be Alex, but I do like some of it, wholeheartedly agree with you on "mainstream extreme metal", the bands you mentioned do nothing for me for the most part. As far as "classic" heavy metal, yeah the blueprint was drawn a long time ago but a good song is a good song no matter when its done, plus guys like Doug Aldrich, Adrian Smith (Dave & Jannick also), even Gus G. still play guitar the way I like to hear it and play it. I guess thats part of the reason it doesn't get old to me, to me theres always something left to say. One of the cool things (among many) about music is that we can all find something we like. Very good discussion.
