I was just about to post a new topic about this Matt. As i said with Les Paul though, we shouldn't feel sad about the passing of a man who lived to a good age and achieved so much. That his passing would evoke such a response if proof enough that he led a fulfilled life.

Listening to his famous scores today left me sad though, he was a prominent figure from a time when the cinema was still relatively young and bursting with enthusiasm and new ideas. Though the musical style of themes such as 'Goldfinger' are dated by today's standards and cinema sound theory has moved on, they still evoke the grandeur from a time when film was an altogether different animal, a time that has passed, like John Barry, into our hearts.

Hi Rob

I know what you mean; but I feel very differently about this. I am never usually bothered when anyone I didn't know personally passes on, but this very different.

The Connery Bond music especially is fantastic, but one of my favourites is the score to On Her Majesty's Secret Service...it is fantastic! I also love the music he did for Chaplin. This is a beautiful piece,

Film music had a certain swagger about it back then. It's still pretty good these days, but certainly repetitive, the number of film scores ripping each other off is a bit daft, often note for note.

Rob, have you heard Gabriel Yared's music to the English Patient? It made in 1996 but just great!

No i haven't seen/heard it. Do you have any favorite modern soundtracks? Or anything that stands out?

Lord of the Rings had a pretty unforgettable soundtrack and that was modern.

Oh WAIT! "Cinema Paradiso" Amazing film and an incredible soundtrack, If you're not familiar Matt you should give it a go 8) One of the best modern films by far!
