This was actually quite common. Just about any rock/metal act playing large venues was doing it throughout the 80's/90's... KISS, Van Halen, Dokken, Judas Priest, Motley Crue to name a few. George Lynch, among others, would even have power running to the rocker switches (apparently with 9V batteries) so they'd be lit and all the more authentic looking. It does make the stage a lot more impressive looking!
