San Francisco Paper Chooses Randy over Hendrix :*)

Post by Six_Strung_Out »

Check out the following quote:
Resurrecting the band

Peter Hartlaub

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

"We're getting the band back together ..."

Ever since John Belushi made the declaration in "The Blues Brothers," those six words have become an inevitability in popular music. The original lineups of everyone from the Pixies to Poison have played the Bay Area in recent years. Even bands you haven't thought about in two decades are back on tour. (Asia plays the Warfield on July 2.)

But sometimes, for reasons that have to do with the abbreviated life expectancy of drummers and guitar players, a band can only get back together in our collective imaginations. That's when we wait for a slow news day, head out to a heavily populated area such as Union Square and start asking people questions like this:

If you could bring one artist or band back from the dead for a one-night-only concert, who would it be and why?

At first this doesn't seem like a fantastic conversation starter. Pick your favorite big-name deceased singer or musician such as Jimi Hendrix or Miles Davis or Janis Joplin, and imagine attending one more epic show. (Thisdayinmusic.com conducted a similar poll last year, with Hendrix and Freddie Mercury of Queen seeming to be the leading vote-getters.) All that's left for discussion is the set list.

But the debate is in the details. Would you feel inclined to bring back Tupac Shakur or Biggie Smalls, on the chance that they might want to take a break between songs to name their killer? Or do you bring back an even bigger historical figure's bad garage band, hoping this momentary resurrection solves one of life's great mysteries? (Did Jack Ruby have a band? Jimmy Hoffa? What about Jesus?)

Even imaginary games need rules. To help you form your decision, consider the following:

1. The musician comes back at the point of his demise: Do you want to waste your choice on the 2006 James Brown, knowing that his artistic peak was four decades earlier? Better to go with Sam Cooke, or maybe Ritchie Valens.

2. Everyone will know your choice: Resurrections don't happen very often, so this is likely to make the news. If you bring back Ronnie Van Zant, so Lynyrd Skynyrd can play together one more time in its mid-1970s glory, you'll never have to buy a beer in Alabama again. You will also forever be known as the dude who chose "Free Bird" over Mozart.

3. The band will come back from the dead, play one two-hour show, then return to the grave: Sorry, classical music fans. Schubert doesn't get time to finish his symphony.

4. Supergroups can be formed: Assuming you could form a group of deceased artists into a new band, would you even try it? Did Audioslave teach us nothing about good artists and bad chemistry?

Below is my choice to rise from the dead and play again. I envision this supergroup (yes, ignoring my own advice) to be kind of a prog-rock band with jam band sensibilities - think two parts Yes and one part Doobie Brothers. Please add your own pick to the comments of the SFGate.com version of this story.

Kurt Cobain (lead vocals): Our other choices had better pipes, but this band doesn't need a flashy singer. And unlike Elvis and Sinatra and Mercury, he died at his artistic peak.

Beethoven (keyboards, organ and Moog synthesizers): We were going to go with Bach, but we were worried the cosmos might screw up the order and send us Sebastian Bach instead.

Jaco Pastorius (bass): Look him up on YouTube. Pastorius is the only musician in history who could play a nine-minute bass solo that didn't feel like something prohibited by the Geneva Conventions.

Randy Rhoads (lead guitar): We would have picked Hendrix, but there was a worry that he might fight for control of the band with Cobain and Beethoven.

Keith Richards (rhythm guitar): What's that you say? He's not dead? Impossible.

Tito Puente (drums): Keith Moon and John Bonham split the vote, and Puente slips in.

Jesus (additional percussion): We're envisioning that Jesus and Puente have kind of a Butch Trucks/Jaimoe Johanson of the Allman Brothers Band thing going. Please make it clear in the liner notes: Jesus Christ only uses Zildjian cymbals.
Yes, Randy Rhoads would not try to control the ultimate band---he would just play pristine electric lead guitar....

wareagle wrote:ugh kurt cobain....vocals and guitar are just subpar

mine would have to be well... ozzy osbourne, yes thats my dream band randy, ozzy, kerslake, and daisley all back together, but if were talking about deceased it has to be this:

ronnie van zant (vocals)-skynyrd is my 2nd fav band, has to be him

cliff burton (bass)-he was such a beast, i dont know many bassists let alone deceased ones so he'd be the one, i mean i like leon wilkinson a lot, but cliff was just great

Randy Rhoads (guitar)-no words can explain my love for his work.

no rhythm because randy is just that good. lol at keith richards, proof that the dead can infact live.

john bonham (drums)- i like a little more then keith moon.

jesus would definatly be rocking the gold plated zilgjian cymbals hand made in the alps of g@d

J.S. bach (keyboards)-truley in my opinion one of the greatest composers who ever lived, if i were to send somthing to describe the earth it would surley be one of his pieces of work, that and boo and diary of a madman :) :) :) now adays id have to send up former president bush to describe....welll...u choose i dont wana offend anyone :)
Skynyrd is probably my second and if not VERY close to being favorite bands as well. What they had was pure magic. Actually I would have picked every one that you did. GOOD CHOICES!!

hmm ... if I were to choose ...

Freddie Mercury for vocals
Randy Rhoads for guitars ... to my ears, Randy always had a strong Queen vibe going on, especially with QR ...
I could go with Cliff Burton as the bassplayer, but he doesn't fit the rock-mold I'm after, more metal, still great though,
Bonham could do well for the drumspot, but who the hell is gonna play bass. All good bassplayers I know about
is still alive. I'll leave that spot open for now 8)
