Drop D tuning

Post by Paul Wolfe »

I've never been much of an 'alternate tuning' kind of guy. Having been front and center in Seattle for the birth of grunge, I do appreciate some of the heavy songs that utilize drop D, Like Soundgarden's Gun or Alice in Chain's We Die Young, but I'm not much of a fan of death metal, etc, so I never thought much about it.

I know Van Halen's Unchained is often cited as giving birth to the Drop D movement, but last night I learned Zeppelin's Moby Dick is Drop D - never tried to play it, so it never occurred to me. Here's a cool little video with quite a few more, like the Beatles Dear Prudence. Most of the songs in the video are fairly recent, but now I'm going to start actively seeking Drop D classic rock songs.
