God of Thunder guitar lesson

Post by Paul Wolfe »

Okay, so I've been trying to teach my 11-year-old son to play the guitar... he's struggled with practicing because scales are not as much fun as solos, and learning the notes on the neck is tedious. Both are necessary, of course, but not fun.

So I taught myself God of Thunder by KISS the other day (just for the hell of it) and then I taught him, piece by piece. He can play along with me now - what a thrill to play along with my son!

Anyhow, I am trying to figure out how to teach him some theory by applying it to God of Thunder. What I am hoping for is that one of you guitar teachers could give me some guidance on this.

So far I'm thinking about a scale diagram for E minor, and then showing how the riff and the chords are derived from the scale... I have a notebook that I put the lessons in for him. I'm hoping that when he grows up he'll be able to look back at this book as something his dad did for him - even if he doesn't pursue the guitar.
