If you have any licks/exercises for the Phrygian, please post them! :) That's probably my favorite mode...
Again, thank you for putting the time into this. 8)

This mini lesson is to help you identify more with the Major modes. This concept to my knowledge was a game for the royal court, and can be applied to other modes (Melodic, Harmonic, etc.) For those that want a much more in-depth overview of this concept, go here.

The concept of brightness or darkness inherent to a scale is devised from a few factors, one of which has to do with how many flats or sharps in relation to the Major/Ionian scale a mode has. The more flats make it more dark, and vice versa. Another is whether it is ascending or descending, in which case descending is darker than it's ascending counterpart. To fully understand this, I highly suggest a read or three over the above link.

Here is a table of the Major modes and the amounts of darkness from Bright (top) to Dark (bottom).

Code: Select all

Lydian(+1) -0-2-4-6-7-9-11-12-
Major -0-2-4-5-7-9-11-12-
Mixolydian(-1) -0-2-4-5-7-9-10-12-
Dorian(-2) -0-2-3-5-7-9-10-12-
Aeolian(-3) -0-2-3-5-7-8-10-12-
Phrygian(-4) -0-1-3-5-7-8-10-12-
Locrian(-5) -0-1-3-5-6-8-10-12-
The (+1), etc means either having a sharp in reference to the major/Ionian mode, or flats. Locrian is an extremely dark scale because of it's inclusion of the b5 (the only mode in the entire scale). This is a great concept to explore, because it can enable you to utilise modes more like colors in a painting rather than globs of goop on the fretboard.

Enjoy,

PS: I'm gonna work on some Phrygian exercises/licks today for NicDots.

Here is a lick in E Phrygian to get the tonality under your fingertips. Starts on the 5th, ends on the root, has some different positions in it to see how to link a line across the fretboard rather than in a box like a mime, and even has a cool/weird legato/arpeggio esque lick that was a bitch to come up with.

Code: Select all

---------------------12h15p12-------------------------17p13-----------

Glad you liked it NicDots. It was hard for me to work out that middle section, but I knew if I just kept with it, something great would come from it. Doing that gave my legato a good Military School style kick in the ass. So, thank you, too.
