Post by Cpt Matt Sparrow »

Hi everyone. The purpose of this section is to encourage and share each others progress of Guitar.

As many of you know I am Classical Guitar crazy and will be using the new thread to give as much help as I can to anyone wishing to explore the nylon guitar. Hopefully some of the guys/girls here will also submit advice too.

EDIT: decided to update this since showing is better than telling, Thought id just add to my original post to stop things getting too confusing. :)

i always play broken chords to help warm up, i play some different open chord shapes then form a bar and move them up the neck, starting slow and then speeding up a bit.

D - Chord shape
-2---------------2---3----------------3----4----------------4 etc.
-3-----------3-------4------------4--------5------------5----
-2-------2-----------3-------3-------------4--------4--------
-0---0---------------1---1-----------------2---2-------------
---------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------
obviously as you can see, you'll need to form a half bar for this exercise

E - Chord shape
-0----------------0---1----------------1---2----------------2- etc.
-0------------0-------1------------1-------2------------2-----
-1-------1------------2-------2------------3--------3---------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-0---0----------------1---1----------------2---2--------------
this one needs a full bar

A - Chord shape
-0---------------0---1----------------1---2----------------2--- etc.
-2-----------2-------3------------3-------4------------4-------
-2-------2-----------3--------3-----------4--------4-----------
------------------------------------------------------------------
-0---0---------------1---1----------------2---2----------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
this will also need a full bar

Like i say start slow and increase in speed as you get more 'warmed up'.
For an extra challenge and to get used to switching shapes again i reccomend switching between shapes as you move up the neck.

for example i normally play E, A,D (all in open position) E,A,D (all in first position) then to the second position and so on...

This kinda thing just helps me get into the flow of picking again, plus it helps with holding bars and chord shapes. Gives you a good chance to work on getting the phrasing of your broken chords nice and even too. :)

Hope this helps, if anyone has any questions feel free to ask or pm me. :)

Please do! I am loving this new section...Nicole!! "dweebs forever" :D

Here is another good warm up.

1st time let the notes on the e ring out, 2nd time try the other string

--8-----7-----6-----5---------------------------------------
-----5-----8-----5------6-----------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------

Then try

---8-------7------6------5----------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
-------5------8-------5------6-------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------

then try the same going to the 4th

Hammer on exercise

This is great because it clamps all the fingers down it means your fingers have to use only their strength and not the momentum of the hand!

ex.1

--------------------------------6-7--------------------------------------
--------------------------4-5--5--------when hammering-keep------
--------------- ----6-7--7--------------the-chord-on------------------
--------------4-5--5-----------------------------------------------------
---7----6-7--7----------------------------------------------------------
---4-5- 5----------------------------------------------------------------

ex.2

-------------------------------------------7-6-7------------
------------------------------------5-4-5-5-----------------
----------------------------7-6-7--7------------------------
--------------------5-4-5--5--------------------------------
---7--------7-6-7--7---------------------------------------
---5-4-5 ---5------------------------------------------------
