Randy's Chorus and Flange settings

Post by Norselaw »

I know some of you guys have allot more knowledge about Randy then me so I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm trying to buy his chorus and flange pedal and was wondering if any of you have experimented to find out what his settings on those pedals are? Also, suppose you were forming an Ozzy tribute band would you leave the flange and chorus pedals on for the whole show if trying to replicate the "Tribute" album? :o

Don't know about settings, but I don't think he used flanger much.

I think he left chorus on, but the settings were low on it. (Low rate, high width) So it would fatten his tone a little.

chorus:rate at 9 or 10 o'clock and depth up to about 11
flanger: manual: 10 o'clock, width: 2 o'clock, speed: 10 o'clock, regen: 2 o'clock. sounds pretty good that way if you have the distortion in front of it
distortion plus: output all the way up, distortion all the way down; output all the way up distortion at 10 o'clock; i use output all the way up 2 and a half o'clock to get my randy tone mixed with my amp gain at 2 o'clock (i get a spot on 1981 tour tone except when my amps turned down it only sounds like it when cranked to six) there are alot of theories about his distortion settings
eq in picture
next ill upload his stage echo settings
btw the flanger was from a guy on tk that was basing it off of evh's settings they seem to work for randy stuff tho when u put distortion infront of it
i only made one of these(the last distortion one) the rest i just gathered from randy sites and hours of searching
hope this helps :D

Damn Man! Most impressive and thank you very very much!! All your research is quite impressive. Do you have a band? I'd like to hear some of your stuff as I'm sure the tone of your axe rules all.

A Roland Space Echo. I almost purchased one and an Echo-plex (AKA Jimmy Page sound). Randy had an Echo-plex in QR and used Peavey's. Also there was an AMS delay used for the albums with harmonies and delay, they are quite rare today and expensive. Joy division used them also.

From what I remember of the bootlegs, Randy's use of chorus always seemed a bit inconsistent to me. On some of the shows you can't hear it at all, on others its very obvious, arguably getting a tad too strong in the mix depending on your taste in modulation.

I suppose a lot of it would depend on the set-up for each gig and how it was recorded. I don't pretend to know exactly, but I would bet it would make a difference. Example-
-Randy using just two/three stacks or using the PA as well? (was the chorus sent just to his stacks?)
-Audio recorded off the mixing board, or from an independent mic
-Room acoustics and positioning of mic.

I remember a diagram once that supposedly showed how he chained everything together, maybe that has the answers.

Off topic: I do need to get a good flanger one day...
