Fender stratocaster
I havent seen pics of RR playing his fender live , did he ever twang! (then again did ozzy ever yodel?)
on cover sleeve of tribute theres pic of his gats , clear coat ash or maple fender big head strat.
Ive seen pics of him practicing with it but not in public.....doesnt love her that way
strat also has a wang bar
zak wylde likes his chicken pickin and hes a fan of hendrix yet he doesnt play the stratomaster
also the strat never gets mentioned in any RR gear analysis in magazines or forums , seems to me theres some serious stratofobia

Re: Fender stratocaster
Ive just had a look at the album sleeve
theres the p dot V , pin stripe concorde V , LP , martin 6 , electric 12 firebird , ovation 6 , and the 1970s strat .
3 bolt , black p/u and gaurd , bullet rod and large head stock .
1975 the black gaurd came in
this is NOT the same strat that he had with quiet riot

Re: Fender stratocaster
These are the known guitars Randy used and most of them had been loaned from friends some of the guitars had stayed with Randy until he died like the 3 pup Black beauty. Which is another guitar he never used on stage. The 12 string firebird was used during recording both albums.

I seem to remember kelle mention something about a 3rd les paul that randy had bought around the time of the black beauty, has there ever been any conformation of that??

Yeah i remember that story Randy bought a couple of guitars from a pawn shop he bought the mentioned LP and a white SG like his guitar hero's Glen Buxton.sytharnia wrote:I seem to remember kelle mention something about a 3rd les paul that randy had bought around the time of the black beauty, has there ever been any conformation of that??

Re: Fender stratocaster
Strats are so different than Les Pauls. Not just the single coil pickups, but the shorter scale length... I got rid of my Les Paul style guitars because I prefer the Strat scale length. We'll never know Randy's thoughts on that subject, though.
Re: Fender stratocaster
I think I prefer the shorter scale length but the LP body shape annoys me a little when sitting down .... so I am now making a strat with the short scale Am also selling one of my LP's, I will keep one just for that extra beef for certain songsPaul Wolfe wrote:Strats are so different than Les Pauls. Re: Fender stratocaster
Correct me if I'm wrong but I remember Randy saying in an interview that he liked strat guitars but didn't used them live because they didn't sound fat enough.
The winner of the rat race is still a rat.
Re: Fender stratocaster
I remember reading that dutchman,he said they sounded too thin
Re: Fender stratocaster
fender = 25.5" and gibson =24.75" ....... RR flying Vs are built to his spec using fender scale and tremolo so Id assume he practiced on fender before the Vs came into being . (He couldve used a gibson V with bigsby)
the 2 diff scale necks feel different so obviously it was a choice he made , the black V mightve been same .
imo he wanted to stay away from strat shape as all guitar slingers were using strats because of EVH
on the album cover the black gaurd strat is next to the Vs so it was carried around and its not the harold strat
http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/t ... y-rhoads-1 = this shows p dot being made .
the ovation is a nylon string classical , I dont think its the gat in the pic of RR in mirror (least I cant see ). the ovation headstock has unique shape

Re: Fender stratocaster
The polkadot V had a danelctro neck, so it was whatever scale that neck was originally made as. The PDV was also a 21 fret neck, so it may have originally been from a Tele-style guitar.friday wrote:fender = 25.5" and gibson =24.75" ....... Randy's main guitar from '75 on was the Gibson Les Paul which he loved. Where did you get the info on the scale length of his Jacksons?
Not doubting, just curious.

Re: Fender stratocaster
Surprised Bernie Torme got away with playing the material as he is an avid strat user...He did an amicable job, i'm off to see him play next weekend. Looking forward to it...
Re: Fender stratocaster
karl sandoval and grover jackson talk about construction. p dot and concorde are both 25.5" doesnt say scale of the black jackson
http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/t ... y-rhoads-1 = this shows p dot being made .
If theres 2 gats side by side , the 24.75" is easier to play because of less string tension , the 25.5" is tuff going .
alot of guitarist tune strings down (slack) for less tension and longer life of strings , not only that but the tone of the guitar changes straight away ,comes alive .....basically its balls drop
the more metal to wood contact the better the tone and sustain . alot of people complain about the floyd rose bridge because its arse in the air and doesnt contact the wood .
the article says RR had a solid brass bridge and sustain block . to benfit most from that itd have to have flat contact with body .
benefit = tone /sustain and also when a string breaks the gat doesnt go out of tune even tho its lost 1 string because the bridge is flat against the body.
now.....IF RR was tuned at std then 25.5" is TUFF ASS playing whiether sitting in a studio or worse on stage.
Ive only got the tribute LP , I never bought the studio LPs ,I didnt want anything to ruin my Tribute experience .
of course Ive heard ozzy on radio and at friends places but never sat down to listen in detail , partly ignoring it.
my only learning is from slowing down the LP , frickin amazing guitarist (NOT me you freak ...RR!!)
the LP sounds like its a tad sped up in places , mind you Ive been thru about 5 record players since!!!
Ive got a strat and a gibson V and have wondered how much time RR spent on the strat . looking at the article RR designing a gat with gibson and strat specs obviously he was used to that scale length but then maybe tuning down was his thing ???????
bending strings on std pitch is brutal!
wonder why he didnt take a gibson V out ?
in the 80s they also had active pick ups , thats what zak wylde uses on his gats.
be pretty wicked if RR had actives, thered be some crazy harmonics and feedback
