It's easier to start with jazz and other forms of music with no distortion. When trying to figure out harmony, start with quality of the chord (major, minor, etc.), then listen to the bass note. There isn't any brand name on it.

I let the notes ring out until the end of each measure, but the guitar has almost no sustain, so they usually die before it.
