I think it has to do with the fact that Michael and Sammy perform VH material without Alex and Ed. Ed is very protective of his music and I think he was offended by Mike and Sam doing that. If Mike had simply gone off to play with Sammy and left VH out of it, things might be different.
Not to mention, Ed wants to jumpstart his kid's career. A high profile tour would get him noticed.
