IMO, Ed just made the best with what he had at the time.
The use of one volume control was due to the fact that he didn't know how to wire the tone control. It wasn't some great epithany he had in his search for some holy grail "tone" as people (or he himself) would like for you to believe. The pickup was most likely slanted because he used a chisel to route the opening and a slanted route was already there from the single coil route. Ed has already admitted to intentionally lying over the years about his guitars and amps. It's really funny to hear people give him major props for all of these "innovative" ideas when in fact he just didn't have the tools to do things properly or the knowledge to know any better.

Dino wrote:rhoads56, your guitars are absolutely GORGEOUS. The craftsmanship and attention to detail that you put into your work is extremely impressive and I don't think anyone here is questioning your pricing. However, I think the whole point of this thread is to recognize that not everyone has $4500-$11000 available to spend on a guitar. Besides, I think Paul is correct in that many people just enjoy "projects" ... and I am one of them.

Having said that, I just recently purchased a "Concorde" Chinese replica as a project guitar. I didn't expect the guitar to play well or sound good right out of the box. Hell, I wasn't even sure I would receive a guitar! I purchased the guitar because I felt the "look" was pretty accurate and it would make a fun project. Besides, unlike the PDV, there aren't too many builders out there who offer a Concorde replica.

When I received the guitar, it "looked" good, but it did have some issues.
There were some high frets, set up was horrid, and the hardware and electronics were pure crap. It was little more than a wall hanger, yet I still felt it had potential. I've since leveled and dressed the frets, replaced the nut and all of the hardware, electronics, and wiring. I gave it a good setup, adjusted the intonation, and I now have a decent looking replica that plays nice and sounds really good (IMO).
All for well under $1k.
Where did you get your concord replica?

Was it from rare electricit guitars .com

Yes. But like I said, I've done a LOT of work on the guitar and I do have experience with builds, fret work, etc.. Should you decide to purchase the guitar, just be prepared to do the same or just accept the fact that you are purchasing a nice wall hanger.

The overall "look" is what inspired me to put some time and money into it.
This pic was take before any work was completed.

Do you have more pics of the guitar after all of the work done to it
A sort of before and after

Unfortunately, I didn't take many "before" pictures and most of the work done didn't really change the appearance of the guitar. I'd be happy to show you what I did though.

NOS Charvel brass tremolo, Seymour Duncan JB (with gold pole pieces) and brass knobs shown in this pic. Note the 2-point (two trem screws) mounted trem, like the original.
(Bridge saddles still needs to be adjusted for proper intonation)
Image

Brass block and brass trem claw.
Image

Bourns 500k pots and Sprague capacitors
Image

Schaller locking tuners.
They may not be authentic to the original or even period correct, but they were direct "drop in" replacements and they work great! So I opted for function over "authenticity".
Image

I may refinish the headstock and remove the Jackson logo. I'm undecided.
Image

I'm having some polished brass covers made for the back.
I'll probably get them in a couple weeks.

You could get a Luther to custome make you one but it won't be close to $1500

I am sorry bug you have 3 options

Make one yourself
Have a custom from jackson made
Have a luthier make you one

OR you could do what a lot of people do

Buy a Chinese replica off rare electrictguitarguitars.com
And upgrade the tuners, pots, pickups, bridge, redress the freights

The replica is only like $300 and it's pretty nice

Will it be playable out of the box- playable yes but it will have major tuning problems due to the cheap tuners they put on

It's a very nice guitar once you put some upgrades on it

All together for the replica and all the upgrades (depending on where you get the parts) it should cost around $800

Thanks Nick..didn't know if there were any luthier's on this site..Not interested in making one myself or upgrading the replicas from China...I just don't have that kind of time anymore....I only have time to plug and rock about a day a week for 3 or 4 hours..like they say..."Life comes at your fast"...lol

Rareelectricguitars.co even puts the hand painted Jackson logo on the guitar

Soo basically your getting a $12,000 guitar for $300 ($800 with upgrades)

I have been talking to the people who made the cases for jackson for the concord replicas and he said that they have the template for the case still on file and they can build you a case for $500 an exact replica that jackson used for the replicas and identical to Randy's original case

So for $1300 you could get the ultimate randy rhoads concord

If you want a list of accurate parts for the concord PM me

No you are not. There are tons of differences between the 2. Looks is about all that is the same.

Oh well. I am not going to get into this again.

Danny,
You're correct. There are a ton of differences between the two guitars.
I have been completely honest in my review of the Chinese replica I received and at no time did I ever say it was comparable to the $12k Jackson, HOWEVER ...

Let's be honest about the true value of that $12k Jackson.
The price set at $12,619.56 was supposedly a hommage to Randy which was to represent his birth date, 12/6/1956. That (IMO) is not the true value of the guitar. Still, there are folks who will pay it just as there were folks who paid $25k for the Fender Frankenstien replica. Hopefully we both agree that neither replica guitar is worth that kind of money.

You were kind enough to state that the two guitars look the same, and that is all I was hoping for. I don't know whether I just "got lucky" with the guitar I received or if this is typical of the Concordes currently being produced in China but I am extremely happy with the appearance. Again, that was all I hoped for.

I have since stripped the guitar and replaced EVERY piece of electronics, wiring, and every piece of hardware on the entire guitar with quality parts. I even had to level and dress the frets and realign the tremolo but the guitar now plays and sounds just as good as any of my other "quality" guitars that were made in the USA.

I am in no way promoting or endorsing Chinese replicas.
I'm simply stating my own personal experiences with this one guitar.
This is not a guitar for someone with no knowledge of guitar repair(s).
I was honest in my statement that it was little more than a wall hanger right out of the box. Still, it was a really fun project and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.
